Today we’d like to introduce you to Kahla Brubaker.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Kahla Brubaker and I am a Tampa Bay lifestyle blogger. I’m the girl behind the screen of Keeping Up with Kahla. Keeping Up with Kahla is a lifestyle based in Clearwater, Florida. Throughout its pages, you’ll find lifestyle nuggets, foodie faves, travel tell-alls, and more.
I’ve always loved writing. Whether it be through my diaries that my mom always found, Myspace, Xanga, Tumblr, what have you – words have always found a way to escape my mind and onto a page or a screen. Because of this, blogging has always felt like a natural fit to me. I love having a platform online to share my life, musings, and favorite things. If not for a reader, then for myself. It’s almost a form of therapy once the words go from my brain and onto a page.
I currently balance my blog with a full-time job. You could say I like staying busy – ha! I’ve been blogging with Keeping Up with Kahla for five years. It’s crazy to even type that. The journey has been full of ups, downs, emotion, passion, wingin’ it, nailing it, etc. I’ve loved every second of it. From brand collaborations to speaking engagements to just sharing what I know and love with an audience – it’s been an incredible time.
My support system is fantastic. In the very beginning, my sister would take my photos. I remember going around our neighborhood, her with the camera in hand, trying to find backdrops that looked good with my outfits. Ben, my husband, has since stepped into the role – both behind and in front of the camera. Friends and family have even snapped a photo or two when needed – they get the whole “do it for the ‘Gram” or “have to blog it” idea.
I’m no stranger to early mornings, late nights, or sacrificed weekends. Sacrifice is part of the gig when you’re keeping up with post deadlines, administrative work for yourself, etc. In most cases, as a blogger, you’re running the show on all ends so it’s a larger time commitment than people think. When it comes to blogging – the magic for me is in the moment of when a complete stranger can read those words and say: “I totally get it.” That’s when I know I’m doing something right.
As I continue to share my life on the internet, I look forward to continuing the growth of Keeping Up with Kahla. Some days it feels like I’m on my own reality tv show. To those who have tuned in and continue to tune in, thanks for keeping up.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Most of my struggles have come from not being chosen for campaigns when I was sure that my pitch was spot on. It hurts, but you learn what you can do better next time (sometimes even just from asking the contact for any feedback they can provide). It never hurts to ask for feedback in order to improve yourself.
Shots can be another struggle point. A lot of times I have an idea of how the shot should look in my head, but sometimes it just doesn’t come together correctly. Moving on from those moments can be tough (I’m stubborn – haha), but in most cases, once I adjust the idea, I end up with a way better photo than originally planned.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a lifestyle blogger, which I love because I can blog about almost any topic. I love talking about my favorite spots in Tampa Bay. It’s fun having a little niche in Clearwater because I get to show off spots in my hometown. It’s fun getting to share snippets of my life or stories that people can relate to.
I always want my writing to come across as conversational, light-hearted, and just telling like it is in the most relatable way. Look, I’m a thirty-year old millennial just trying to navigate life – aren’t we all? When people reach out to me saying they can relate to a story I wrote or 100% felt the same way about something that I did, that’s when it matters the most.
