Conversations with Breanna Bethell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Breanna Bethell.

Hi Breanna, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started martial arts at the age of four under the direction of my dad Grandmaster Earl Harris. He and my mom Deborah Harris owned and operated Earl Harris Karate Academy in Valrico, FL. It was there that I learned the basics of Tae Kwon Do. I began competing in both forms and sparring at the age of six and went on to win many competitions in my age group. At the age of 14, I started teaching and fell in love with martial arts all over again. Helping young children develop strong motor skills through martial arts was so awesome to be a part of. In the fall of 2015, my husband Don and I opened our school, Proletics Martial Arts in Valrico, FL. We offer an after school program and evening martial arts classes to children ages 6-13yrs old. I have been blessed to work with some many children in the community and even pass down my knowledge to my own kids; DeSean who is 12 years old recently earned his 1st degree black belt and Demir who is five recently earned his white belt with orange stripe. These days I still enjoy teaching and sharing my art on social media. I currently have a role-playing the character Rayna in an up and coming martial arts short film called The Paper Line. Directed by Tampa’s own Ryan Watson. I have also worked with amazing brands such as Venum Women to help promote International Women’s Month. In the future, I would love to star in a superhero movie or perform stunts in an action movie. But I guess we’ll have to wait and see what the future holds.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Martial Arts has taught me so much. Many times I have wanted to quit, move on to something else and never look back. However, I always remind myself why I enjoy it so much and then I get right back to it. Training for competition is always a challenge and finding different ways to teach my students can be difficult at times but it always works out.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I currently hold a 4th degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. I am most proud of teaching and promoting my students through the ranks and watching them grow into amazing martial artists. Being a woman of color does set me apart from most instructors in this male-dominated industry however I try to use that to my advantage in the sense that if I can do martial arts anyone can!
