Community Highlights: Meet Olivia Pelts of Sunshine City Counseling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivia Pelts

Hi Olivia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
It started with not having any clue about marketing, how to get clients and questioning everything– especially whether I was made for the world of therapy. Working at Burg CrossFit and being an integral part of the team that grew the facility from 60 members at 1 location to over three locations deep and nearly 350+ members and a handful of years later—starting the Nasty Girls Podcast, which eventually found itself on the top 20 list of podcasts to listen to by Runners World Magazine—becoming a lululemon Ambassador and a mom all at the same time. Co-creating The Visionaries Collective where we help healers get unstuck in their businesses so they can live their life while helping others do the same. Perhaps one of my greatest joys has been cultivating the team at Sunshine City Counseling and fostering a safe place for people to land and be cared for by incredibly caring and skilled therapists. If you had told me five years ago when I started SCC that I would be here, I would never have believed you. With a team of eight therapists, it is our hope and desire to be “that counseling place” where people know us for how we show up for them, hold space and ultimately witness them stepping into their fullest potential. While growing SCC, Jamie Molnar and I co-created The Visionaries Collective as we both struggled in developing our businesses and didn’t want others to have to do the same. I mean, how many times have you come across a chiropractor, massage therapist, doula, or therapist who has a crap brand, website and marketing BUT they are incredible at what they do? Yeah, same. We’re here to change that.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Smooth is the opposite of how I would describe my journey. I think it is easy to look at someone successful and see the sexy, flashy side of things and think– “wow, I want my life or business to look like THAT…it’s sooo easy.” Truth us, those people had the luxury of skipping through the years of making little money, the frustration of not knowing how to get clients in the door, having crap systems, etc. So, my pain points? Here are a few… –When I first graduated, I worked at a group practice, but I couldn’t figure out how to market myself in a supersaturated market (Orlando, FL). It left me questioning everything, and I spun into a bit of a depression, which ultimately led me to discover my love and passion for marketing and branding. –I wasn’t making enough money as a therapist, so I took a job at Ikea for a hot minute while also taking on contract work, all the while building my private practice in Orlando at night… the grind was real. –In moving to St. Pete (it will be six years May 2021), I worked my way into a job at Burg CrossFit and taught myself everything there was to know about marketing, funnels, sales, brand development, etc…again, the grind was serious. –I felt incredibly burned out in the Fall of 2017 that had me re-evaluating everything about SCC, Burg CrossFit, The Nasty Girls Podcast but most importantly my pace in life. –I have struggled more with boundaries around work, my mindset, money and system creation than I care to admit. Everything has been intentional and purposeful, even if I couldn’t see it at the moment.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Sunshine City Counseling?
Mission: At Sunshine City Counseling, we know what it’s like to feel stuck, overwhelmed and dissatisfied in relationships and in life. Through one-on-one and group counseling sessions, we work to bring people into a greater awareness of who they were created to be so they can step into their fullest potential. SCC is passionate about helping people step into their fullest potential. We’re dedicated to raising up and empowering our community through free resources like A Safe Place To Land Podcast or our Therapy After Hours, where one of our counselor’s talks through a specific topic during the 1st Wednesday of the month at noon on Facebook. We hope and desire to become THE counseling center with amazing therapists for individuals, couples, kids, and teens. We have also developed The Better Together Project that provides reduced-fee counseling services for those who otherwise might not otherwise be able to afford it. Mental health shouldn’t be just for the elite. Mental health is a right, not a privilege. While we are a group practice, each of our therapists has its own specialty from couples, trauma, addiction, anxiety, and kids/teens.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Finding a mentor doesn’t always mean looking for someone who is more successful than you. It can simply be someone you admire for a particular quality or the way they live their life. Success can look different than just the car they drive or the office they occupy. The mentors that I have found to be the most relatable and helpful for me have been individuals who I have admired in character and how they orchestrate their life. If we are the summation of the five people we hang out with the most…
