Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Delac
Hi Matt, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey began with a passion for technology and a determination to make coding accessible to more people. After working as a developer for companies like Google and Airbnb, I founded SheCodes in 2017 in Lisbon, Portugal. What started as a small workshop for 10 women has now grown into an online platform teaching tens of thousands of women from 196 countries how to code. With a mission to reduce the gender gap in tech, SheCodes offers comprehensive coding workshops designed for beginners and advanced learners alike. Our workshops have maintained an average rating of 4.9/5, a testament to our commitment to quality and impact. Today, I’m proud to lead a global, remote team dedicated to empowering women through technology.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but that’s part of what makes the journey rewarding. Early on, one of the biggest challenges was transitioning from in-person workshops to an online platform. I had to figure out how to make the experience just as engaging and effective remotely, which took a lot of trial and error. Another struggle has been balancing growth with maintaining quality—making sure every participant feels supported no matter where they are in the world. There were also moments of self-doubt and uncertainty, like any entrepreneur faces, but those challenges have taught me resilience and the importance of staying focused on the mission.
We’ve been impressed with SheCodes, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
SheCodes is all about empowering women through coding. We specialize in creating beginner-friendly and advanced coding workshops tailored specifically for women, helping them gain skills to break into the tech industry. Our workshops are fully online, making them accessible to women worldwide, and we’re proud to have taught tens of thousands of women from 196 countries so far.
What sets us apart is our focus on making coding approachable and fun, combined with a strong community aspect. Each course is designed with flexibility, deadlines, and challenges to help students stay motivated, and we include hands-on projects to make the learning experience practical and rewarding.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the positive impact we’ve had—seeing women land tech jobs, change careers, and build confidence through coding is incredibly fulfilling. If there’s one thing I’d want readers to know, it’s that coding is for everyone, and SheCodes is here to make the journey into tech as supportive and empowering as possible.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I’d say persistence has been the most important quality for my success. Building SheCodes wasn’t always easy—there were plenty of challenges along the way, from scaling the business to adapting to an online model. But staying persistent, even when things felt uncertain, allowed me to keep moving forward and refining the vision. Persistence also helps me stay focused on the bigger picture, which is creating opportunities for women in tech and reducing the gender gap in the industry. It’s that drive to keep going and improving that has made all the difference.
