
Hi Khalid, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I did a dual residency in Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine. After working in the ER for almost 20 years, I came to the conclusion that many patients were coming to the ER that could have been managed by their primary care physicians. Unfortunately, the trend of diminishing insurance reimbursements has forced most practitioners to see more patients to keep their practices open. This means less time spent with patients and addressing all of their concerns. It also means there is no time to educate patients about their illnesses and to promote preventive care. In order to address these issues, I opened my practice with an out-of-the-box thought process. Specifically, what would I, as a patient, want from my physician and their practice. For example, we implemented modern technology and built an entirely digital practice. From patient intake forms to prescriptions to lab orders, we make sure the patient experience is smooth and user-friendly.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
All businesses have their own challenges; however, a medical practice has some unique obstacles. For example, the credentialing process with insurance companies is tedious and lengthy. It may take years to obtain a contract with certain insurances. In addition, some insurance companies will close their networks and deny contracts to practices, thus restricting patient’s access to healthcare. Getting reimbursed from insurance is also difficult. It may take months to get reimbursed, so you are always running an accounts receivable anywhere from three to six months behind, causing cash flow issues for the practice. The current pandemic is its own unique challenge. Patient volume has significantly decreased during this time for many practices. It’s a reminder that you need to know your numbers and watch your expenses closely from a business perspective. Owning a business is a roller coaster ride of ups and downs, but you should never be discouraged as there is always light at the end of the tunnel.
