Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Clarke.
Hi Joseph, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Years ago, while working as a teacher and coach in Los Angeles, I suffered a debilitating back injury. I sought help from some of the top orthopedic specialists in the area, but each gave me the same grim prognosis: I would never lead an active lifestyle again and would likely need multiple surgeries.
Having seen several family members lose their quality of life after back surgeries, I knew that wasn’t a path I was willing to take. I had to find another way. That search led me to acupuncture, Iyengar yoga, nutritional therapy, and meditation.
Eight months later, I was back to mountain climbing. Five months after that—just thirteen months from my diagnosis—I ran the Los Angeles Marathon.
That experience sparked a deep curiosity to understand *why* these approaches worked when conventional medicine had given me no hope. I returned to school and spent seven years studying medicine, earning both a master’s and a doctorate. After apprenticing with senior practitioners, I opened my first clinic in Santa Monica, California, eventually building one of the area’s leading acupuncture and functional medicine practices.
During the pandemic, seeking a calmer environment to raise my daughter, I relocated to Sarasota and founded Copacetic Health Institute. Today, our mission is simple: to serve the community with excellence, mentor the next generation of practitioners, and help our patients achieve results that exceed expectations.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Practicing a form of medicine that isn’t always widely accepted isn’t an easy road. The outcomes have to exceed expectations. Because, let’s face it—many people come in skeptical. If what I do didn’t work, I wouldn’t still be doing it.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Copacetic Health Institute?
At Copacetic Health Institute, we practice truly integrative medicine—where Eastern and Western approaches meet. Our goal is to help patients get real, measurable results by addressing the root causes of illness rather than just managing symptoms. We specialize in acupuncture, functional medicine, and evidence-based lifestyle therapies that support the body’s natural ability to heal and adapt.
What sets us apart is the level of care and depth of investigation we bring to each case. Every patient receives a customized treatment plan that considers not just lab results or symptoms, but the full picture of their health—physical, emotional, and environmental.
We’re also proud to be a teaching clinic, mentoring interns from local colleges and helping train the next generation of integrative healthcare providers.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the trust we’ve earned. Many of our patients come to us after exhausting other options, and seeing their quality of life restored—that’s what defines us.
Ultimately, I want readers to know that our approach isn’t alternative—it’s comprehensive. We’re bridging traditional wisdom and modern science to deliver care that’s both compassionate and clinically effective.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My advice to anyone just starting out is to be patient and stay curious. In this field, mastery doesn’t come quickly—it’s built through experience, humility, and genuine care for people. Learn to listen deeply to your patients; they’ll teach you more than any textbook ever could.
I also wish I had known earlier how important it is to understand the *business* side of medicine. You can be the most skilled practitioner in the world, but if you don’t know how to run a practice, communicate your value, and build trust, it’s very hard to make an impact.
And finally—don’t lose your sense of wonder. Medicine, especially integrative medicine, is a lifelong study. Stay open to new ideas, question everything, and let your results speak for themselves.
