Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Lee.
Hi Jennifer, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I grew up at the foot of the master. In other words, I grew up with a dad in the business that has driven me, fulfilled me and I have so very much come to love. I learned early because of my environment and proximity to my father and his work. I always loved math, numbers, money, and especially making money.
As a kid, I had countless jobs, and making money allowed me to get the things I wanted. I learned the value of a dollar, the value of serving others, and entrepreneurship. After college, I took a job in accounting. I was pretty bored with the drudgery of numbers alone. My father called me one day, I will never forget it. I took the call in a small private conference room. He asked “would I like to join his business?” I said YES! I need to give two weeks’ notice, but yes.
Honestly, I did not know what I would have to do. Licensing, talking to people, analyzing data, preparing reports, running illustrations, and an elevator pitch! And good thing, I may not have said yes. What I did know was my Dad loved what he did, he loved working with his clients, and he was always around for our games and my Princess evenings. We had a great life and I wanted it too. 28 years later, I am thrilled that I was blessed with a dad in the industry.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There are no smooth roads. Of course, I have had bumps; hiring support staff, and advisors, relocating my business from Maryland to Florida, and honing in on my niche of women in financial transition.
My move to Florida and acclimating myself to meeting new people and building a network again was a struggle. I attended meetings and women leaned away from me. They said, “I have one of you” or “My husband handles that”. So, defining my niche was probably the single largest hurdle.
We’ve been impressed with Modern-Wealth, LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I work with women in financial transition. I find that women going through the challenges of divorce, the sale of a business, or the loss of a spouse have a lot of balls in the air. We help them consider their path forward. Our role comes into play as an advisor, confidant, coach, financial therapist, and advocate.
I am proud of the podcasts I have participated in on the subject of divorce, I love helping people through stressful situations and taking some angst off the table. I am also proud of my book Squeeze the Juice.
Readers should know that you can’t unlearn what you will read in my book. It is filled with stories and examples. It’s an easy read, written for the ostrich, who prefers to avoid money topics. And, it’s a risk-free interview. I promise it won’t hurt!
Any big plans?
The biggest item on my plate today is the onboarding of a new team member. Our firm focus this year will include acclimating clients and the team to our collaborative approach.
More podcasts, speaking engagements, and I hope women’s events. Money does not have to be stressful and overwhelming. It can be a mighty tool when you learn how to wield it.
