Today we’d like to introduce you to Galo Cando.
Hi Galo, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
It starts with 21-year-old Galo Cando coming to New York City for an opportunity to provide change to his family. Galo was fortunate enough to work in Uptown Manhattan with Sr. Benny, who helped Galo receive his working papers and to learn the jewelry industry trade. Learning the skills from Sr. Benny, Galo was able to pick up the multitude of different jewelry skills from other bench jewelers. As years went by, working at various locations in New York, Galo has made a name for himself around the Diamond District in NY. After about 15 years of experience, Galo Cando became a Master Bench Jeweler, and then he moved to New Jersey for another opportunity. It all seemed quite similar for Galo, where he moves to different jewelry businesses to bring their business up, and then realized they abused his skill set and time. The final move was to Naples, Florida, where Galo worked at the most high-end companies, such as Provident in 5th Ave. At these locations, Galo was able to work with jewelry pieces that are of extremely high value, yet he was able to repair these pieces without the fear of its delicacy and value. Although this was a wonderful opportunity for Galo, his family started to advise him to start his own
jewelry repair business. Galo was the Master Bench Jeweler repair provider for the Southwest Florida region. In the end, Galo realized and made the decision that he is the key to all kinds of repairs and custom design. With the help of his family, they
established We Can Do Jewelry & Repair in 2021, where his kids, Jonathan and Johana Cando took ownership and administrated the family-owned jewelry business. With over 2+ years, our business has gone through financial hardships,
and a slow start, but we have triumph through all those obstacles with the help of the Small Business Development Center. We have managed to be familiar with filing the business’s taxes, tracking expenses and revenue, having legal documentation that supports our business, and how to have all permits. We are now fully operational from our residence, but we are still seeking a set location where we can call home. Having great hopes to have the opportunity to move, we envision our place to be in a high end, high traffic area where people will consistently want their jewelry repaired or want something custom designed. We Can Do Jewelry & Repair will continue to grow and eventually we will be one of the top jewelry stores in Southwest Florida.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The jewelry industry, a well-established sector, anticipates experiencing gradual yet consistent growth through 2025, with overall revenues being in the 1.6-billiondollar range. Although revenue did decline during the COVID-19 pandemic, it is
now rebounding in post-pandemic times. The jewelry industry has now recovered by smaller jewelry retainers transitioning to service-based operations. Growth continued because of the increase in luxury item purchases by consumers (IBIS
world report January 2021). Customers today visiting jewelry stores face challenges in making decisions. They often struggle with trusting jewelers to provide services that meet their expectations, and they wish to avoid overcharged prices.
