Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Moss.
Hi Emily, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Before my career as a designer, I was an elementary school teacher. I’ve always been a creative, so alongside teaching, I would paint or do photography as side gigs. When I was out on maternity leave with my 2nd child, my husband, a contractor, started his construction company. I would help out his clients by taking them through the construction process and making sure they got their selections in on time, helping them choose selections here and there, and just help them throughout the build. I really enjoyed going through the construction process with clients, hearing their concerns and helping them problem-solve solutions, as well as seeing the selections come together as a whole at the end. One of my husband’s clients heard I was helping homeowners and asked if I wanted to do his house- all the design, selections, etc just on my own, he did not want to be involved. I jumped at the opportunity, and never looked back. That house ended up being on the tour of homes, and I ended up getting more clients from all the exposure. The second full project I did got national exposure and from there the company has just grown.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Haha- I don’t know if the road of entrepreneurship or the road of interior design are ever described as smooth! There are definitely smooth spots, but I would say the journey has definitely been a winding road, with obstacles along the way that sometimes involve some scrappy scrambling over. Some of the struggles I faced when starting, such as the learning curve of construction/design/project management, the business side of things marketing/invoicing/sales, and then the ego side of things like imposter syndrome or having a hard time valuing my creativity are not struggles I face now. Now that I am 6 years down this entrepreneurship journey, the challenges I face are the balance between working in the business versus working on the business, fine-tuning systems, and procedures, and managing all the moving parts.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Emily Moss Designs?
We are a full-service luxury interior design firm located on Anna Maria Island. We specialize in Coastal Modern Design and are known for our clean, crips designs that incorporate the organic aesthetic and lifestyle considerations of Florida coastal living. Brand wise, I am proud of our recent unsolicited feature in SRQ Magazine- we did a project that they had seen photos of and featured it as their cover story.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Technology has played a huge role in shifting the interior design business, as is has had in many industries. People have easier access to sought-after goods and there are many apps and whatnot that people can use to “design” their own spaces. I think we will see designers needing to lean more into highlighting their value of their service as well as their experience because there is really so much more logistical and project management work to design than just putting a few pictures together. Over the next 5-10 years, my prediction is that consumers are going to want more environmentally conscious selections being made in their houses as well as furnishings. As more and more focus is put on the environment, sustainability, and what we need to do to help save and protect our planet, I think clients will want to be a part of that and their decisions will lean towards energy efficiency, green products, and furniture-wise, they will want sustainably made pieces that they plan to keep for a long time.
