Community Highlights: Meet Effie Santos of Madi’s Movement

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Effie Santos.

Effie Santos

Hi Effie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
My life has always been driven by a passion for making a meaningful impact. With 25 years in leadership, consulting, and the financial industry, I’ve dedicated myself to forging strategic collaborations that benefit both the corporate and nonprofit sectors. Despite my success, there was a point when I felt something crucial was missing. During a reflective pause, I realized what truly brought me joy, leading me to pivot and start my own company focused on connecting nonprofits with supportive corporations.

However, my journey took an unexpected turn when I faced the most devastating pause of my life. On March 4th, 2021, my daughter Madi was tragically taken from us in a car accident. Everything stopped for me then. It wasn’t until February 2022, nearly a year later, that I found the strength to step back onto the public stage. My TEDx talk, “The Power of the Pause: Finding Courage in Change,” marked my return to the community and was the first time I spoke about Madi’s dreams and goals publicly, which inspired the creation of Madi’s Movement. This nonprofit launched on what would have been Madi’s 22nd birthday, August 15, 2023.

The outreach and support following my TEDx talk were incredible, and it inspired me to go further. Encouraged by my husband, I decided to write a book to expand on my stories and strategies for my talk. “The Power of the Pause: Finding Courage in Change,” along with an accompanying journal, will be published this June, coinciding with the launch of my new brand and business, Effie Santos.

This personal story is a testament to how transformative pauses, whether chosen or imposed, can be. It’s a reminder of how resilience, reflection, and a readiness to embrace change can turn personal tragedy into a source of inspiration and a catalyst for good.

Let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road, not in the least. In my opinion, the most devastating thing that can happen to a person happened to me—losing a child. Grief is an isolating, relentless beast. Losing Madi plunged me into a darkness that’s difficult for many to understand, let alone enter. Alongside the immense loss of my daughter, I’ve faced the loss of friends, income, and a loss of self. There’s an ever-present fear that such tragedy could strike again. Grief has many layers, and it’s been a profound struggle to unpack them all.

As a mother, my instinct has always been to care for my kids and everyone around me. Then, suddenly, I was faced with the monumental task of learning how to take care of myself. While I have had incredible support from some friends, others, not knowing what to say, have uttered words that were unintentionally hurtful. And truly, sometimes, saying that you don’t know what to say is enough. The grief never disappears; there isn’t a set number of months or years after which you’re suddenly “over it.” You have to learn to live with it—I have to learn how to live without Madi physically being here.

I am undeniably a different person now. If there’s one thing that’s crystal clear, it’s that my outlook on life has fundamentally changed. I view everything through a new lens now—anything can happen at any moment. I love deeply and choose to surround myself with my family, friends, and people who fill my heart and seek to fill theirs in return. My mission is to carry forward Madi’s dreams and legacy and to be surrounded by those who share this outlook on life.

This journey has reshaped me, taught me about the depths of resilience, and shown me the boundless capacity of the human heart to adapt and embrace life, no matter the pain it throws our way.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Madi’s Movement is a non-profit organization dedicated to transforming the lives of foster teens as they transition into adulthood. Our mission is to empower these young individuals with the tools, skills, and support they need to thrive independently. We specialize in a comprehensive approach that addresses the multifaceted challenges foster teens face, from educational barriers to emotional and social support.

Our programs are designed to nurture and support these teens in every aspect of their lives. Empowered Education tailors educational pathways to individual aspirations, helping each teen achieve their academic and career goals. Career Connections links teens with professional opportunities, providing them with real-world experience and networking connections. Financial Foundations teaches essential financial literacy skills to ensure their independence and stability. Meanwhile, SuperSkills Academy focuses on life skills like resume building, mock interviewing, and social etiquette, alongside nurturing personal talents such as public speaking and leadership.

We are excited to introduce our inaugural Pathways to Employment: A Career Readiness Expo, designed to prepare foster teens for the workforce. This expo will offer practical workshops where teens can engage in activities like professional headshot sessions, resume-building, and mock interviews to hone their job-seeking skills.

The expo will also feature representatives from a variety of industries, providing a unique opportunity for teens to connect with professionals and learn about different career paths. These industry experts will share insights about their fields, discuss essential skills, and offer advice on how to break into and succeed in their careers. It’s a fantastic chance for teens to gain direct exposure to the professional world and see what possibilities lie ahead.

In addition to these practical sessions, we’ll also offer guidance on leveraging social media for job searches and tips on making strong first impressions. This expo is a crucial part of our Career Connections program and reflects our commitment to providing comprehensive, actionable support to foster teens in our community. It’s designed to not just prepare them for the job market but also to inspire confidence and enthusiasm about their future careers.

What sets Madi’s Movement apart is our commitment to creating lasting relationships and a supportive network that extends beyond traditional care. We are about building a community that continues to support these teens as they grow into adulthood. We ensure that our teens are not only prepared to face the world on their own but also know that they are never truly alone.

Brand-wise, I am most proud of the authenticity and impact of our work. Madi’s Movement is a living tribute to my daughter, Madi, and embodies her spirit and dreams of making a significant difference in the world. Our brand is about genuine connections, heartfelt support, and creating opportunities for those who often go unnoticed in society.

What changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5 to 10 years, I foresee significant transformations within the nonprofit sector, particularly in how organizations engage with their communities and leverage personal stories to drive change. For Madi’s Movement, this means deepening our engagement through our established programs that empower foster teens as they transition out of the system. We’re planning to expand our outreach and refine our initiatives to address the evolving needs of these young individuals, ensuring they have the support and tools necessary to thrive.

This comprehensive approach ensures that the vision of Madi’s Movement—to see every foster teen empowered and thriving—is not just a dream but a reality we’re building every day and keeping Madi’s dreams in action.

I’m also thrilled to be expanding my ecosystem with the launch of my new brand, Effie Santos, alongside releasing a book titled “The Power of the Pause: Finding Courage in Change” and a companion journal in fall of 2024. These initiatives are designed to extend the reach of my message and share valuable lessons from my journey. My book explores the transformative power of taking intentional pauses to reflect and regroup, a practice essential for enriching both personal well-being and professional effectiveness.

As an influencer and speaker, I aim to use every platform available—from conferences and workshops to digital platforms—to amplify my voice and mission. This strategy is focused on inspiring action and fostering a culture of participation and support within the community. I envision a future where the Effie Santos brand is synonymous with impactful change, driven by authentic, compelling storytelling that deeply resonates and motivates others to join us in our cause.

In essence, as the industry evolves toward more genuine and engaging methods of community involvement, I am positioned at the forefront, committed to using my platform to inspire and mobilize a community of advocates dedicated to supporting the next generation.
