Community Highlights: Meet Editha Butler of Blue Sky Medical

Today we’d like to introduce you to Editha Butler.

Hi Editha, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My nursing journey began in 2014 when I became a Registered Nurse, working in medical-surgical and hospice hospital settings. During this time, I earned my Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the Medical University of South Carolina in 2016. Around that same time, my grandmother (whom I am named after) began to experience cognitive decline and was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. My husband and I became her caregivers, her advocates, and her voice.

Caring for her and witnessing her fight with Alzheimer’s inspired me to return to school and become an Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner (AGNP). When she passed away in hospice care in 2019, at 86 years young, my passion for end-of-life care truly deepened.

In the years that followed, I worked in Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Skilled Nursing Facilities. When COVID-19 hit in 2020, I witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of social isolation and loneliness on our older adults. That period changed me. The toll that pandemic-related isolation took on people’s mental and emotional well-being was staggering, and it opened my eyes to the urgent need for compassionate, comprehensive mental health care.

Mental health had always been close to my heart. My husband, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, has his own journey with PTSD, depression, and anxiety from multiple combat tours. But it was during COVID that I felt a calling to go deeper, to understand not just the physical, but the mental and emotional side of healing. That calling led me to pursue my Post-Master’s Certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, which I completed in 2021.

Having both primary care and psychiatric backgrounds has given me a unique perspective. When I returned to working with adult and geriatric patients, I began noticing the same troubling trend across healthcare: quick visits, medication-heavy approaches, and little time to truly understand the “why” behind a person’s symptoms. Too often, I saw medications prescribed to treat side effects of other medications—a cycle of polypharmacy that left patients feeling overmedicated and underheard.

I wanted to change that. In 2023, I completed a fellowship with Dr. James Greenblatt in Integrative and Functional Psychiatry, and it completely transformed the way I practice medicine. I realized that mental health cannot be separated from physical health, nutrition, or environment—it’s all interconnected.

With the support of my husband and son, I founded Blue Sky Medical, a Functional Psychiatry practice dedicated to helping patients uncover the root causes of their symptoms and take an active role in their healing. My approach is collaborative and educational; I don’t just prescribe medication and send people on their way. I help my patients understand their medication options, the value of functional lab testing, and the holistic strategies that support both mental and physical wellness.

I started my private practice to give people the time, attention, and compassion they deserve. My goal is for every patient to feel truly heard, valued, and empowered—because they are the experts in their own life experiences. I feel honored to walk beside them in their mental health journey, and I truly believe that authentic human connection and support are vital for all of us.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, but it’s been incredibly rewarding. One of the biggest challenges I face is deprescribing. Many people come to me already taking four, five, or even six different mental health medications—often duplicate therapies prescribed by different providers over the years.

Helping patients safely come off unnecessary or overlapping medications is not a simple process. It requires time, education, and patience. Most patients tell me that no one ever explained what to expect when tapering off these medications, or why they might experience withdrawal-like symptoms. Deprescribing has to be done very slowly and thoughtfully, but when patients start to feel clearer, more energetic, and more “themselves” again, it’s absolutely worth it.

Another challenge has been changing the mindset around what true healing looks like. Our culture tends to focus on quick fixes—take a pill, suppress the symptom, and move on. But that approach doesn’t get to the root cause of what’s really going on, especially when it comes to mental health.

It can be hard to help people understand that lasting wellness requires commitment and lifestyle change. I often tell my patients, “It’s never just one thing that’s going to improve your mental and physical health.” It’s always a multifactorial plan, one that might include medication when appropriate, but also focuses on nutrition, regular movement, sunlight, quality sleep, and human connection.

Encouraging people to take that deeper, more integrative approach can be challenging at first, but once they experience the difference, when they realize they have control and influence over their well-being, that’s where real transformation begins.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Blue Sky Medical is a Functional Psychiatry practice built on the belief that mental health care should be personalized, compassionate, and rooted in understanding the whole person—not just their symptoms. I founded Blue Sky Medical to change the way mental health and wellness care are delivered, creating a space where patients feel truly heard, supported, and empowered to take an active role in their healing.

As a dual-certified Adult-Gerontology and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, I specialize in uncovering the root causes of emotional and physical symptoms through a functional and integrative approach. My work focuses on understanding the connections between the brain, body, and environment—exploring how factors such as nutrition, hormones, inflammation, sleep, and lifestyle influence mental health.

At Blue Sky Medical, I don’t just prescribe medication and send people on their way. My approach is collaborative, I act as a guide and educator, helping patients understand their treatment options, including both traditional medications and evidence-based natural supports. I also utilize functional lab testing to look deeper into things like nutrient deficiencies, thyroid function, and metabolic health, which are often overlooked but can have a profound impact on mood and cognition.

What truly sets Blue Sky Medical apart is the time and attention given to every patient. Appointments are unhurried and deeply individualized, allowing space for authentic connection and understanding. I’m known for taking a root-cause, whole-person approach that blends the best of modern psychiatry with the principles of functional medicine.

I’m most proud of the fact that Blue Sky Medical represents a shift in the culture of care, one that values the entire person, collaboration, and compassion over quick fixes. My goal is for every patient to walk away feeling seen, valued, and equipped with the tools they need to heal from the inside out.

Ultimately, Blue Sky Medical isn’t just a clinic, it’s a movement toward more mindful, integrative, and heart-centered mental health care. I want readers to know that healing is possible, and that they deserve care that honors the whole person—mind, body, and spirit.

What does success mean to you?
To me, success isn’t about numbers or status, it’s about impact and alignment. I define success as helping people reclaim their health, clarity, and confidence while feeling seen and understood in the process. When a patient tells me they finally feel like themselves again, that’s success.

It’s also about creating a ripple effect—when one person’s healing improves their family, relationships, and community, that’s real transformation. On a personal level, success means maintaining balance, growing a business that reflects my values of integrity, compassion, and education, without losing sight of why I started: to offer people hope and a more holistic way to heal.
