Today we’d like to introduce you to Doug Izzo.
Hi Doug, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Douglas P. Izzo has built a career defined by community engagement, political leadership, and a deep dedication to strengthening the region he calls home. Currently serving as the Executive Director of the Englewood Florida Chamber of Commerce, Izzo’s journey has come full circle: he began as a high school intern at the same Chamber he now leads.
Izzo’s professional path reflects both ambition and service. While pursuing his studies at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, he secured an internship with the Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber of Commerce. That early experience became a launching pad for a decade-long career at the organization. Starting in administrative support, he advanced to membership services and ultimately to the role of Government Affairs Director. In that capacity, he worked closely with business leaders and elected officials across multiple levels of government, shaping policies and initiatives that supported economic growth and community well-being.
Between these roles, Izzo briefly explored real estate, but his passion for civic engagement and advocacy drew him back to the Chamber world. His political acumen extended beyond his staff positions: Izzo also served as a political consultant for CATECOMM and participated in a variety of local, state and federal campaigns. His growing reputation for leadership led to his appointment to the St. Pete Beach City Commission, where he was later re-elected twice and ultimately served as Vice Mayor. These roles gave him a platform to influence community development and strengthen ties between residents, businesses, and government.
After more than a decade of public service and advocacy in the Tampa Bay region, Izzo returned to Englewood to lead the Englewood Florida Chamber of Commerce that first introduced him to civic life. In his role as Executive Director, he has worked to elevate the Chamber’s visibility, support local businesses, and build bridges across the community.
Izzo’s influence extends well beyond his executive role. He has served on the boards of several organizations, including the Charlotte County Economic Development Partnership, Englewood Family YMCA, Englewood Beach Waterfest, HCA Florida Englewood Hospital, and the Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association – Charlotte Chapter. He is also an active member of Lemon Bay Sunrise Rotary, serving on the Board of Directors and holding the position of Sergeant at Arms during the 2023–24 term. His commitment to service demonstrates his belief in fostering collaboration and giving back to the community.
His accomplishments are underscored by his ongoing professional development. Izzo is a graduate of the 2014 Tampa Bay Beaches Leadership Program, the 2021 Gulf Coast Board Institute, the 2022 Englewood Leadership Program, and the 2022 Florida Institute for Political Leadership. He was also recognized with the 2016 Vacation Rental Industry Advocate Award, highlighting his role as a strong voice for the tourism and hospitality sector. Today, he continues to shape the future of his community as a member of the Charlotte County Planning Board.
From his first internship as a teenager to his current leadership as a Chamber executive, Doug Izzo’s career has been marked by a consistent dedication to service, leadership, and community betterment. His journey illustrates how early opportunities, combined with passion and perseverance, can come full circle and transform a local intern into a community leader.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Of course, the road to where I am today has been far from easy. The world is a crazy place, and people can be just as unpredictable. Every day brings a new challenge, and while that can be daunting, it is also what fuels me to keep moving forward. My faith is what anchors me through it all. I believe with all my heart that nothing is impossible with God. As a proud member of Saint Francis Catholic Church, I draw strength from my faith and community, knowing that every obstacle I face is another opportunity to grow, serve, and trust in God’s greater plan.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
The road to where I am today has never been easy, and luck had nothing to do with my success. It has been hard work, unwavering dedication, and a steadfast faith in God that have carried me through.
