Today we’d like to introduce you to Jillian Acosta.
Hi Jillian, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I have always been into skincare and makeup since I was old enough to remember. I grew up watching my mom put on makeup and wanting to see everything she used. As I got older I was very unsure of what my career would be. After getting my first facial I fell in love with the process and that is where I began to do my research. Fast forward to me getting my license, I have always wanted to work for myself and have my own spa suite. I definitely went the nontraditional way, and definitely the hardest way, I have to say.
Going solo and opening my own suite was the dream and I finally made it happen, except I had no clients, no marketing, and no experience in the real world. It has been a struggle to build clientele and to wear 10 different hats now being a business owner and an esthetician. Being a solo esthetician has been so rewarding, yet terrifying! I am constantly learning and growing, and I love every second of it. As I said, this may have been the hard way to get into the esthetics world but it has really pushed me to not only grow my business but myself as well! The passion, the drive, the love, and my clients are all that make synskn work. I have so many big things planned for my business and I look forward to creating the best experience for all who choose synskn esthetics!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Opening my own suite and becoming a solo esthetician right out of school and having zero clients, and zero real-world experience has definitely made my startup a little bit of a struggle. I knew from the beginning that I wanted to have my own business, so at that point, I had no choice but to just go for it! Even though I struggled and am still struggling to gain clients and gain momentum for synskn, I think without the struggle I wouldn’t be pushing myself as hard to make it the best it can be.
Not having some spa experience from working in a big chain or even a local spa is probably the biggest struggle I’ve had. I haven’t had someone to point me in the right direction or correct me when I’m wrong, or even guide me! But like I said, it has made me work even harder. I constantly pay for continuing education classes, I watch videos, I reach out to other estheticians who have been doing this for years and I feel relieved that I am able to do all of these things with the amazing esthetics community.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
When learning about so many different skin concerns throughout school and after I was licensed I found myself drawn to knowing ingredients, learning about hyperpigmentation, and anti-aging.
I am constantly fascinated by learning the best ways to treat and prevent these skin concerns. I love seeing the results that come from anti-aging as well as pigmentation. When clients are happy and satisfied and confident it makes me feel the same!
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I have to give credit to my parents for always supporting me in school and now for my solo esthetician journey! My boyfriend has also played a huge role in helping me get started with my business and helping me create a business plan, helping me with all of the back-end knowledge when it comes to owning your own business.
He is my biggest supporter and constantly helps me grow. I was stuck doing nothing with my license for over a year because I was too scared to start. He gave me the confidence and support to get me to where I am now!
