Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Kinzer.
Hi Emily, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a former Emmy-nominated TV News personality whose career brought me to FL, where I fell in love twice: first with the water, and then with my husband. I’m now taking my storytelling skills to the sea full-time.
After a successful career in TV news and dedicated the past decade to telling impactful news stories within communities where I lived and worked, I’m now thrilled to be documenting our travels and telling the stories of the incredible people we meet along the way.
One month into dating, my (now) husband and I decided that travel had to be part of our future. We bonded over our love for travel and adventure. After two years of planning, praying, and preparing, we have made our dreams come true. We’ve quit our corporate jobs and sold our home to purchase our dream boat, a 2016 Leopard Sailing Catamaran. We are now finalizing our plans to take off to the Caribbean this fall. As Cole and I prep our boat and obtain captains’ licenses, we are sharing the journey of it all on our website, theadventurecrews.com.
I’m excited to continue telling unique stories, ones that would otherwise never be told. It’s literally a dream come true to highlight these incredible places and share the stories of the people who live there.
Our sailing bucket list includes navigating the Panama Canal and crossing the Pacific. We would love to see French Polynesia, Fiji, and potentially go all the way to Tonga. For now, though, our chart plotter is set for the soft-sand beaches and warm water of the Bahamas and beyond.
I hope that as we write our own story, we inspire you to create a life you love.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
This journey has been anything but smooth. The best way we describe it is like a rollercoaster, especially a boat-buying process. From the very beginning, we were reluctant to tell others about our dreams as there were many pieces of the puzzle that would have to come together. However, as much as we tried to keep it to ourselves, we could not ignore the burning desire we had in our hearts. We caught a lot of heat for our dream. People closest to us doubted our plan but we stayed committed through it all. We believed in our dream because it was all we could think and talk about. We woke up thinking about it, we talked about it every waking moment, and it was the last thing on our minds as we fell asleep. Shoot, we even dreamed about our dreams over and over for two years!
Not to mention, COVID put my husband in the hospital for nine days, with one foot in the door of ICU the entire time. That only fueled the fire that we were not going to wait until retirement to live the life of our dreams! We had to overcome fear and doubt the entire journey but in the end, we’re doing this!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Most people know me as a TV news anchor: fully made up and wearing whatever solid color dress I picked out that morning. I’m incredibly proud of how far I went in that career, particularly being Emmy-nominated for my work as a solo video journalist. Maybe leaving behind something so hard-won makes this leap even more significant. I’m proud of having the courage to take the leap in the first place, because who finds it natural to set aside stability and predictability, comfort and safety?
What sets me apart is my keen eye and ear for storytelling. It’s one thing to capture the essence of a story, but it’s another to capture your audience—and I’ve learned how to do both. Those skills helped me climb the ladder in my TV career, and I’m excited to use them in this newest venture.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I believe the sailing community will only grow, especially within the demographic of young professionals. Remote work is becoming more and more popular; all you need is an internet connection (technology like Starlink is making it even easier!).
As for content creators and influencers, video is taking over all platforms. Combine quality content with great storytelling, and you’ll be way ahead of the competition.
