Today we’d like to introduce you to David Aranovich.
Hi David, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Memory Lane time! Well, I was born in Chicago to Russian Immigrants. After years tormenting my parents and teachers being a class clown, I went to Illinois State University and got a degree in Theater (Acting). Graduating, I did a tad bit of theater, acted in a supporting lead in a feature film, did a couple of Industrials (educational films), got my SAG card and then moved to Los Angeles to pursue my dream!
I had so many wild adventures there, they wouldn’t fit in this article. Lol. But they included being homeless and sleeping in my car for months, being David Mamet’s personal assistant, somehow getting into a party at Prince’s house and booking my first role on a TV show – JAG (CBS)!
From there, I was lucky enough to act across some amazing, talented people, such as Bradley Cooper, Val Kilmer, Daniel Radcliffe, Reese Witherspoon, Anne Hathaway, improvise with Vince Vaughn and more. I also got into voice acting and voiced several video games (Call of Duty, etc) and have done a bunch of Looping work (ADR) for movies such as, Mission Impossible, Indiana Jones, etc. A bunch of commercials, including an award winning Bud Light commercial, where I played “Rusty” – a guy with a shock collar on his neck. LOL. Oh, and I also tried my hand at stand up (a tiny bit) and performed at the Comedy Store, Flappers, etc.
Then, I decided to move to Florida for a while, for various reasons such as my parents were getting older and wanted to spend more time with them getting older, work on some personal development, etc. While here – and to stay creative, I’ve done Stand Up Comedy a lot more and got into Audiobook Narration. I’m about to narrate another book now and just narrated a book by David Mamet. Oh, and I’ve shot a lot of short comedy video’s as well.
Though I havent been as focused on acting, I shot a supporting role in a movie directed by the lovely Haylie Duff a few years ago and this summer I got cast as a recurring character on a huge NETFLIX TV show! I can’t mention which one yet, but season 2 comes out around Thanksgiving. :)))) I wish I could say more because the creators and stars are legends! I got cast from a self tape audition out of Clearwater, Florida and flew back and forth to Los Angeles several times for it. 🙂
Anyways, that’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Omg. Definitely not! I’m an ACTOR! Lol. The biggest challenge was being homeless and sleeping in my car in Los Angeles. Also couch surfing. Even though I had a car, it was still during the winter in L.A. which is still cold. I remember having one of those thin blankets and all my stuff in my back seat and trunk. To go to sleep, I would find a quiet street, blast the heat and then turn the blanket into a cocoon and turn off the car. Then, I’d wake up from it being so cold in the middle of the night and turning on my engines and heat again and repeat the process. Once I went into a Jack in the Box (fast food chain on the west coast) to brush my teeth and another homeless person looked at me and KNEW I was homeless. And I thought – “Man, I just hit rock bottom”.
Also the ups and downs of being on a red carpet one day, people recognizing you on the street from a famous commercial or going to a private party at Prince’s house – to you’re completely broke eating two $2 Burger’s every day, no one knows who you are and you can’t catch a break. It really tests your ability to “keep your eyes on the prize”!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I mentioned it in the other section, but I’m primarily an actor. Though Ive done my share of drama, comedic acting is my specialty. Improvising with Vince Vaughn where he whispers, “You know you’re good. You know you’re good right?” And yells to everyone on set, “He is the best part of this scene!”
So I think creating a funny, yet believable character in a comedy TV show or movie is where I really excel. I LOVE collaborating with fellow talented comedic actors, directors and writers. And being able to channel the funnyness into CHARACTER and STORY.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The power of your thoughts and how no matter what negative thoughts come in, that we all have the power to “reset” and focus our eyes on the goal. It may not happen right away, but if we are able to stay focused, and keep learning and improving – and staying away from negative people, then it’s just a matter of time. 🙂
