An Inspired Chat with Kesha Porter of Tampa, FL

We recently had the chance to connect with Kesha Porter and have shared our conversation below.

Kesha, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about your customers?
While my customers will give me the overall energy they desire for their events, they truly prefer when Dj KP just gets into her bag and curates the right vibe. Sometimes that means I end up on the dance floor with my customers. Sometimes that means I’m having an impromptu karaoke moment. It always means they’re having a good time.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Kesha Porter. I am a DJ in the Tampa Bay area. Dj KP is my name and I believe that curating the right vibes and energy is my game. I grew up playing drums in church as a kid and have played for many gospel artists over the years. I shifted to DJing around 4 years ago and it’s been an amazing journey. I love to dance with my customers and always have a good time no matter the occasion. I love what I do.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
I would say my relationship with my niece over the last few years have shaped this most. She’s only 10 years old so I’ll explain. My niece Kennedy’Rae thinks I’m the coolest person on the planet. To me that’s all every aunt wants from their nieces and nephews. In her eyes, I can do no wrong and I approach life with that in mind. I always live by integrity and always try to do the right thing. I know she’s watching. If I make her proud, I truly am the coolest person on the planet and I’m starting to see myself as such.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear of what others thought about me always held me back in life. I think that whether people care to admit it or not, we all care about what others think about us. We’re human and for some reason at some point in our lives those thoughts have mattered to us. Sometimes that stopped me from going for goals I had. Sometimes it made me think I wasn’t good enough. It doesn’t hold me back anymore and I’m actually really proud of that. In some spaces, I’d even consider myself a risk taker.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would say a few things really matter to me but if I had to choose just 3, they’d say family, gratitude, and integrity. My family means the world to me. So much of who I am and what I do is because of the way I was raised and things I experienced. I love them more than anything. Gratitude as well. I believe you should be grateful for all things, even when it’s hard. There’s a reason for everything. Integrity is also important. That shows up in your character and its not something you can pretend to have. It matters to me.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people will say that I was genuine and that I was kind. Being a DJ fails to compare to that. If people remember a DJ set because I smiled at them and it helped them have a better day, I’ve done my job. If I’ve created a memorable birthday experience through the special shoutout, I’ve done my job. That’s what I hope people tell about me when I’m gone. Being a solid DJ would just add the right amount of razzle dazzle to the story.
