Dick Colligan shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Dick, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
Wow, great question. I work for myself so I guess the answer would have to be yes!!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Sure. I have kind of a unique background. I worked on Wall Street for about nine years then left during Covid. During my banking career I was doing standup on the side and got a talent manager and started auditioning for movie roles and landed one during the summer of 2020. So when I had to leave work during Covid my plan was to ride off into the sunset of Hollywood. Ironically that movie has still not been made but I’ve done five others! My brand is really two things: a smart guy telling jokes on stage and then a very disciplined actor who dives into roles and brings characters to life across comedy and drama.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
When I was five years old I saw Star Wars for the first time and wanted to be Luke Skywalker. A few years later I realized that role had been filled so I figured the next best thing was to be an actor. That was my goal but I never thought I could make money at it and got interested in more lucrative fields – like investment banking. However the fire never left me and only grew as I got older. I would actually get upset when I would watch movies because I wasn’t in them. Around 2019 I read the book Dianetics and started applying its principles and discovered that acting really was my basic purpose. I told my girlfriend at the time that I was thinking of leaving my job and pursuing an acting career and she was skeptical of this. Later we broke up and I put that dream behind me but it never fully went away. So in a lot of ways Covid was a blessing because it gave me the push I needed to fully pursue my dream.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Don’t do drugs.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, I’m pretty authentic publicly. I like to be open and communicate with people and I love meeting new people on social media.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What will you regret not doing?
Thankfully, not a lot. I’m glad I took the leap that I did and actually have found that a lot of things I never planned on aligned, once I made the commitment.
