We’re looking forward to introducing you to Courtney King. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Courtney, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I have been enjoying this sweet time with my baby boy and working on our home garden outside of work.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am the owner and founder of Kingdom Wellness, an all women, faith based massage practice in Sarasota, FL. I began as a single licensed massage therapist to now having multiple licensed massage therapists working with me. I have recently transitioned into working more administratively after the birth of my first son last June. We are currently working on expanding our team and our services.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
When I was a little girl, I was so incredibly introverted, but I wanted to show others how much they matter even at such a young age. Being so shy, I often was left out of things or just not noticed at all, and even though it was of my own doing, it still felt very lonely. I remember sitting in a church pew hearing the preacher talk about asking God to see others the way He sees them, and since then that has always been my heart, “God let me see people the way you do. Help me put myself in their shoes to understand what they could be experiencing, so I can best love and serve others like you.” I wanted to take notice of the least of these; help those people feel special who don’t feel seen at all. I wanted to help others feel noticed and like they matter even if the world tells them different. I loved being creative, serving others and bringing joy into every “small” room, grow friendships and just be a silly kid.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
Being so shy and insecure, I held many fears; fear do man being the biggest. The obvious, public speaking, and then maybe the not so obvious, the fear of hurting someone and fear of taking failing. Not in some psychopathic way, but the unintentional hurts like saying the wrong thing or wanting to lie because you think it would hurt less than the truth. The fear of failing because if I take that risk, I’m not the only one who will be affected. I see those fears a lot in my career as well. Of course I never would want to harm someone and when it comes to business, sometimes you have to take risks because that’s the only way you grow. Even failure is part of growth because that’s how we learn.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
One of the qualities that I hold dear is being my authentic self. If you were to walk up and talk to me on the street or at work, you would be talking to the same person I am at home. I’m not always perfect, but I strive to be true to who I am and I think that is something that attracts people because there is so much “fake” out there. We crave authenticity and that’s the version of me that I always try to show others.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
If I retired tomorrow, I think my customers would miss our relationship most. Even though it was professional, we build such a community and a family. People come to us with real issues both physically, mentally and spiritually and we strive to always give them our fullest attention; to make them feel seen and special. We truly foster relationship and space to be your authentic self, while being met with honor and understanding and I don’t feel that is something that’s very common in our distracted world.
