An Inspired Chat with Christy Camper of Riverview

Christy Camper shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Christy, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I really love taking stay-cations at local BNBs and trying restaurants in those areas. I’m a huge foodie! Bonus points if it’s near a beach!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Christy Camper and I’m a photographer who focuses on capturing portraits, automotive, and branding photos. What makes my brand unique is the way I bring a values-driven approach to everything I do. Authenticity, boldness, inclusivity, and intention guide both my creative process and the experience I provide for clients. My work is about helping clients own the moment, feel fierce and confident, and walk away with images that reflect their inner strength and presence.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was a wild child growing up! A spitfire, a leader, a daredevil, free sprited… My dad used to call me “The Boss”. My mom would describe me as active, smart, and helpful, but not someone to be messed with. I think I always had a strong sense of self and never swayed too far from who I am and what I believe in.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
Definitely when I took 4 years to myself to do shadow work and childhood trauma healing. When uncomfortable emotions or conflicts arise, I try to figure out where it’s coming from and validate those emotions. Crying, moving the body, and deep breathing are important tools to feeling all the feels and regulating the nervous system. Self awareness, a sense of wholeness, and not getting stuck in a loop will turn pain into power.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
There are so many, some even paradoxical or contradictory.

“Everyone is your competition.”
There are plenty of clients to go around and they all have different needs. (i.e. genre, budget, quality, style, vibe)

“You have to chase trends.”
If every photographer used the same presets, sets, props, poses, etc. you’d disappear into the noise. Do trends if it feeds your creative flow, not to stay relevant.

“If I raise my prices, I’ll lose all my clients.”
You’ll lose the ones who are no longer aligned with you or those who don’t value your work as much, and that’s okay!

“If you don’t charge luxury prices, you won’t get anywhere.”
There’s no magic number that guarantees success. People charge what they do based on the shoot time, cost of doing business, how much they value their own work, etc. It’s definitely not a one size fits all!

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I want to be remembered for my sense of humor, wisdom, passion, resourcefulness, and my desire to always learn something new. I would like to leave my loved ones feeling loved, valued, and with lots of fun stories to tell!
