Aaron Robinson of Valrico on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Aaron Robinson shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Aaron, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is a normal day like for you right now?
I usually get up and hit the ground running. Most of what I do involves a lot of work marketing, and connecting with fans on social media. I spend about two to three hours a day working online. Then I put in time for guitar practice. I spend and hour on technique, before diving into writing new songs. The evening is for spending time with my wife.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Aaron Robinson. I am the guitarist/songwriter for Tampa, Florida based heavy metal band Blood of Angels. I also wear the hat as a manager for the band.

Blood of Angels began in 2017. We released our first EP titled “Rise of the Fallen Gods.” Our first single “Odin’s Wrath” did well with underground metal online radio. In 2018, “Odin’s Wrath.” won the Independent Music Award for “Best Metal/Hardcore Song” in NYC. That started the ball rolling on our journey. The award was followed up by a record deal.

In 2020 we released our first full-length album “Failure of Faith.” That album opened up the door to start touring the United States. Those tours were followed up by our latest 2023 single “Spillage” winning the Hollywood Independent Music Award for “Best Rock/Metal Song.”

This year we have toured in the United States, and recently we just got back from our first European Tour. Currently, we are looking for a label home for our new album.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
The first time I traveled to Europe on my own. I always compare that moment as my Mt. Zion. It was such an eye opener.

I learned during that trip that the American news media, as well as a lot of my elders were completely wrong about so many things.

They were wrong about socialized medicine. They were wrong about how behind Europeans are compared to America. In some cases, they are way ahead of us. This experience changed my view of the world. I recommend everyone to spend time traveling.

One of my favorite quotes is from Mark Twain.

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.”

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There have been a few times I thought about giving up. Especially, considering my age and how long I have been trying to build a career in music.

At the end of the day, I love to do it. I love writing. I love being in the studio, and more than anything I love touring and performing.

Besides my wife, it is the most important thing to me, and I still have something to say.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, I am the same person in all aspects of my life. One of the things I love about our band is that we don’t hide behind costumes and masks. What we play and what we say, are who we are. The music is our true expression of who we are as people.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Absolutely nothing! I love my life, and I love what I do. I wouldn’t change anything. I would take it all the way to the end.
