Rising Stars: Meet David Herb

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Herb.

Hi David, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I was a industrial painter for years until I suffered from some respiratory damage. So, I decided to pursue my artwork. My artistic styles have changed and evolved throughout the years. Now my focus is creating unique, one-of-a-kind pieces of art using authentic license plates. I have been working with that medium for almost ten years now.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I started out as a traveling artist creating pieces of art in my van and other places I could use as a makeshift art studio. Booking events and selling artwork and jewelry at small venues around the country. I landed in New Orleans, where I was a French Quarter artist for many years. When things fell apart for me there. (New Orleans is a tough town) I moved to Clearwater and got a spot-on pier 60. I’ve been doing great ever since! It was definitely a rough road to get here. But well worth the struggle. I love where I’m at as an artist these days!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I started out making unique pieces of chain maille jewelry and industrial art once my health took a turn as an industrial painter. Over the years, my art has changed and evolved into what I do now. I work with recycled license plates to create one-of-a-kind pieces of art. I have had some awesome accomplishments that I am proud of. I designed a necklace that was used in the final Twilight movie. Breaking dawn 2. I have made art or jewelry for a few celebrities, such as Kat Von D, Mike Tyson. musical artists such as Poppa Roach, Mastodon, Goatwhore, and a few film projects such as NCIS New Orleans and True Blood. I have donated to many charities, such as the wounded warrior project and the cancer society of Louisiana. This is just to name a few. I no longer create jewelry and primarily focus on license plate art. My artwork with license plates is unique and stands out against the others is because I am also a license plate collector, and I know dozens of other collectors. So, I am able to find beautiful plates to use.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
Not really. I do use social media. And I have a website. But I create on my own.
