Life & Work with Evelyn Suarez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Evelyn Suarez.

Hi Evelyn, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Born in the Caribbean island of Dominican Republic. Migrated to the U.S. in the very early stages of my life, faith and hope raised and guided me to go after anything I put my mind to. I’ve always believed that life is a song that has high and low tunes, but I always kept my rhythm.

As a little girl, I remember spending most of my free time watching cooking and baking shows. I was fascinated to see chefs cooking, mixing different ingredients together. I spent a lot of time in the kitchen with my mom, I remember standing on a stepstool to have a better view of what she was cooking. I can say I was her little sidekick in the kitchen.

During my teenage years and into my college years, I honestly had a rough time choosing a major and concentrating on one specific career. I did know that I didn’t want to work for anyone else, I wanted to have my own business. I decided to major in Business Administration. After college, I felt quite unease and unsure of what would be my next step. So for the meantime, I became a Business Banker for Wells Fargo Bank. In this job, I felt amazing due to the fact that I was helping small and big businesses in some way and that I was part of their team somehow. After a few years in the banking industry, I fell in love and got married soon after, I was blessed with my first child and decided to take some time off and take care of my daughter.

It took me a while before I found my true calling. Via a mixer and some encouragement from my amazing husband who has always encouraged me to spread my wings, I made my first cake, never looking for perfection but always filling people’s hearts with joy and adding a sweet touch to life’s daily routine. The rest is history.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been many bumps in the road. I’ve learned to find a good work/home balance, even though I work from home. I have two small children that are my priority, and I am thankful that my wonderful husband fully supports me in what I do. One of the biggest bumps in the road would have to be when I received a double tendon transplant surgery on my ankle around eight months ago. I am a very active person and because this surgery required me to sit back and recover, I have been able to listen to my body more and adjust to working at a slower pace. I am still working through this to this day, but I have not let it stop me from doing what I love.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Cake Artist, I specialize in custom cakes and everything sweet for all events including weddings, sweet 16, and quinceanera.

Evelynn’s Cakes is known for creating glamorous, delicious but most importantly fresh cakes.

What I am most proud of is my dedication to this art despite all of my setbacks. I’ve been able to push through and create masterpieces that have been enjoyed by so many; I have never limited myself when it comes to my abilities.

I think that what sets me apart from other talented Bakers and Cake artists is that I honestly love and enjoy creating beautiful cakes. Baking is hard work and dedication. I can honestly say that I enjoy it so much that for me it’s a playday, I enjoy every part of my career and most importantly, I put my heart and soul into every cake I create.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I believe you make your own luck. My entire life both personal and professional nothing was handed to me. I’ve been working and pushing myself since I can remember. And I am thankful for all my struggles and setbacks because they have helped me grow and appreciate everything that I have worked for.
