Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Bright.
Hi Amber, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I originally started pole dancing in a shed behind my house, teaching myself from watching YouTube videos. After about a year, I decided to go to the original Apple Jelly Studios (formerly in Sarasota) to do a Pole dance photo-shoot since by this time, I was able to do a few tricks, and I thought it might be fun! While there, one of the former owners pulled me aside and told me she really liked my style and personality. She asked me if I had ever considered teaching a pole dance class. I was honored and decided it would be something I’d like to pursue. I then became certified through X-Pole Pole Teacher Training, which was the leading certification program in the industry at the time. After my certification, I started teaching at Apple Jelly Studios in Sarasota. Over the course of a year, one of the owners retired, and the remaining owner wanted to close the studio; I was devastated! Even though I lived in Tampa at the time and was commuting an hour and a half each way to teach twice a week, the studio had become my home away from home. Because I was so invested in the studio, I purchased Apple Jelly from the remaining owner so I could continue my dream of teaching pole dance fitness. I made some changes to the studio and went from teaching twice a week to five times a week – still making my long commute everyday from Tampa. I owned the studio in Sarasota for five years until eventually, the landlord wanted to repurpose the building, and we were forced to close. Not wanting to build a new studio so far from my home, I stopped teaching for about a year. Even though I was still practicing at home and actively performing in multiple shows, I felt lost and without purpose. I ended up moving to St. Petersburg in 2018 where I found a space downtown that I was able to remodel and then reopen so I could once again start teaching people the life-changing benefits of Pole Dancing.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The St. Pete location took about six months to build. We were finally able to open our doors in this beautiful, new space February 2019. It has definitely been a challenging first two years in St. Pete, with having to close for a short period of time in 2020 due to the pandemic. But, with dedication, perseverance and a strong passion for teaching, Apple Jelly Studios has been able to thrive while helping people find strength – one pole dance at a time!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I teach Pole dance fitness. I would describe it as a mix of dance and acrobatics. Pole dancing is a whole body workout that is actually really fun. Pole Dancing comes in many forms and can be very unique to the individual. For example, there is the widely known style performed in gentleman’s clubs but also many other styles such as an athletic competitor. Pole can be done in heels or barefoot, Sexy or sporty, lots of tricks or lots of flow. There is no one specific way to Pole Dance and we encourage everyone to embrace the style that fits them and we try our best to design our classes to be something for everyone.
Pole dance is life-changing because not only will you build your physical strength but you will also develop self-love and confidence that carries over into your everyday life.
My greatest accomplishments over the years as an instructor / Studio owner have been the opportunities to perform in dozens of shows, Judge multiple pole competitions and Choreograph performances that have been held at the Straz Center. I am also grateful to have been able to take workshops with some of the top artists and athletes in the industry. All of which has helped me to become the teacher and performer I am today.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I have learned on my journey has been that it is possible to overcome life’s difficulties and create your own destiny. Growing up, I had a very hard life, most people are shocked to hear what I’ve overcome and with all the odds against me, I was able to find something (pole fitness) that not only changed the way I felt about myself but eventually grew to be something that I would be able to do for a living and help others to go on their own journey of transformation as well.
