Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Luque.
Hi Samantha, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I started my production company because I was tired of no one giving me an opportunity or chance in the industry. Especially being a woman, I felt that my voice was pushed aside and not heard. For several years I worked with non-profits helping them tell their story and getting more people involved in helping the community. As a storyteller, I wanted to break into the film industry and couldn’t find my way in. I didn’t want to wait around for an opportunity instead I decided to create it. When I first started my company, I had no idea what my mission was all I knew is that I wanted to tell stories. The first year I was able to work with all kinds of people/ organizations to grow my name in the local community. Within a year I realized what made my company so different from others was that I created my team to focused on working with females and minorities. This was so important for my company and myself because I wanted to give us a chance to work in an environment where we have a voice and create stories that are important to us and what we stand for. Today I am still working on expanding my company and finding new projects but can say that I put a lot of blood, sweat, and tears in each and every project.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I faced many obstacles when I started creating my company. First was to be taken seriously, as a female people didn’t believe that it was all me doing the work. There are people that thought they could take advantage and get free work but I learned real fast how to stand up for myself. I had several different times on my own set where people believe that one of my friends that were male were in charge of my project. Many stereotypes of being a female in the film industry especially being in charge and fighting for inequality. A huge challenge is funding, since I do this full time it’s hard to find steady work
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about SLlama Productions?
I own a female-run production company that specializes in filmmaking and photography. We are known for our storytelling abilities and bringing our clients’ vision to life. We worked in countless different projects from commercials, documentaries, promo videos, interviews, and special events. We offer a photography service that ranges from portraits, graduation photography. family portraits. concert photography. We are different from other production companies because we are a fully female-run. We want to give females a chance to break the status quo.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The main lesson that I have learned is to stand for what I believe in and to trust my work. I am my own biggest critic and I can be really hard on myself. I’m still learning to control that part of myself but I have come very far. I also learned to enjoy the journey and not the destination. Life is too short and you have to step back and enjoy it.
