Today we’d like to introduce you to Beth Chernes.
Hi Beth, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Four and a half years ago, after over a decade of full-time jobs, that ran me into highs and lows of exhaustion or boredom, I dipped my toe into “independent contractor life.” I got a great gig with one client, and I thought I hit the jackpot. I loved the flexibility, enjoyed the work, and thought I’d just ride it out beside them for years to come.
No dice. Pandemic lockdown happened. Business owners cringed and safeguarded their wallets, and I was let go by my one and only client. I was left with No job, No experience freelancing, and 1 month’s salary remaining. And… a government shutdown. Oh, snap. Shortly after my contract ended, I spent 1 month learning everything I could about freelance writing. I doubled down on all the freelancing necessities: Launched a website, Prettied-up my LinkedIn profile, and Spread the Word that I was looking for freelance work.
An old friend that I played volleyball with about ~10 years ago reached out to me —she needed content written for one of her clients. I’d been writing content in my prior role in nonprofit communications, so it was both an easy yes and a Kickstarter for my business. (FYI, I still produce some content for that original client).
I realized then I could make this freelancing “thing” into an actual business. No more reporting to bosses, strict work schedules, or relying on 1 client to pay my bills. I’d go all in and find a handful of amazing clients, deliver impactful results, and build up my business.
So I did. A few years down the road, the same friend (who is a powerhouse entrepreneur) was like, “Hey, do you want to do some SEO?” By the next week, I was gobbling down all the search engine knowledge I could. Digging around in Google Analytics. I realized the beauty of copywriting matched with SEO strategy. It’s like the PB&J when it comes to service offerings. A perfect match! It had me hooked and convinced that it was the way forward.
1 year later, I’m doing SEO strategy and copywriting for multiple clients, making more money than I ever have—and working less than half the time of a “full-time” job. And I work from the comfort of my home, on my schedule. So I can be present for my family and volunteer for my passion projects, like serving on the board of the Junior League of Clearwater-Dunedin or as a volunteer with the Girl Scouts. I am grateful to have an incredible support system (husband, family, and friends).
But my advice? Think of big challenges (or dumpster fire situations) as ambitious opportunities. Embrace the chaos, find an opportunity, just go for it, and make it work. Be bold, bet on yourself. Things just might be better than you ever imagined.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was always innately curious. Why did this happen? Where did this come from? Will it be okay to open the sliding door and run away with the dog? Yeah, my mom and dad loved my curiosity, it sure did keep them on their toes when I was a toddler!
I’d like to think that through the years, my personality has always been marked by a blend of curiosity, confidence, and an insatiable desire to understand the world around me. I moved around every few years as a kid due to my dad’s job, so I was frequently the “new kid,” always getting to know a new set of classmates. So, my natural inquisitive nature, paired with actual constant changes in my environment, molded me into a resilient and adaptable woman.
Yes, I had a goth period (didn’t every elder millennial?), but my overall childhood was fortunate to be one of love and support. I grew up driven to solve the mysteries of life—make a difference—and be the hero, like the characters of the fantasy novels I devoured.
Maybe it was evident early on that I had an entrepreneurial spirit—I’ll have to ask my parents about that one. But, the continuous learning, questioning, and my love of writing and reading still stick with me to this day and shape how I see the world and try to improve it.
