Hidden Gems: Meet Allison & Matt Davis of Noble Nectar Apiaries

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison & Matt Davis.

Hi Allison & Matt, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
We moved to our family to Florida from Nevada nearly 10 years ago to work for a local professional theatre here in the area. We grew up loving the outdoors, and the adventures. We love gardening and learning how to be self-sustainable! Moving to Florida was a different world for couple of desert kids. Not only that but theater also was never something we had ever been involved in, but we had the skills and Matt’s amazingly talented brother who saw something in us! Matt was the master carpenter and I (Allison) was the scenic painter. While working at the scenic shop it came to our attention that some bees had moved into an outside wall and they were going to be exterminated by maintenance. We did not want that to happen of course, so Matt was able to convince them to get the bees out alive! With a lot of reading and YouTubing a trap out was set up and the bees were saved, which meant we now had ourselves our first colony of bees!

Beekeeping was never even a thought as Matt actually used to be afraid of bees! However, as time passed, we grew to love beekeeping, and once word got out, we started receiving calls about rescuing bees for people we knew! We eventually found ourselves in a place where we couldn’t keep up while working full-time jobs, so we to needed to make a decision to take a leap! We quit our jobs and made beekeeping our full-time work! We focus on live bee removals, and education, however, an awesome perk is our bees are great at producing delicious honey, in which we bottle and sell as well! We also have just launched a nonprofit called The Bee Musketeers INC. which will allow us to put more funding into our education programs as well as offer bee removals on a donation basis so those that may not have the financial means can make sure their bee problems can be handled with care, and rescued alive!

We have turned something that really seemed to be a twist a fate, into our family business. We are passionate about what we do and we love sharing with others! We are so thankful to live in a community that is so supportive, not only to our small business, but supportive of saving creatures that can be very misunderstood, but much needed for our survival! Life is full of surprises and this has been an amazing journey for our family!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not everything has been peaches and cream, as with anything there are always challenges. Beekeeping is always full of new things to learn and frustration along with the rewards. When dealing with nature nothing is ever just what it’s supposed to be or what you might have read in a book, the bees are always throwing us curveballs and not following the instruction manual

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Noble Nectar Apiaries LLC specializes in live bee removals. I think we are known best for not only that service but being able to take on some of the more challenging removals. We are a husband-and-wife team, we do most of if not all of the removals together.

We also are very proud and particular about how we care for our bees, living by the philosophy that if it’s not good for us humans we don’t use it on our bees.

We are also the only ones who offer a monthly subscription for our honey, delivering honey to those who sign up, delivering honey much like the milkman used to deliver milk. We do a bottle exchange as well to encourage our customers not to throw away their glass bottles.

We all have partnered with the Museum of Fine Arts in downtown St. Petersburg, they allow us their rooftop to keep beehives, as well as have been a great community partner in spreading the word about the importance of bees!

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Of course, while Matt and I have known each other since high school, many of our memories of childhood were very different. Though one thing we can both say is that growing up in a place where we were surrounded by the Sierras, and beautiful desert terrain, our most peaceful and enjoyable moments were spending time in nature, either with our families, and friends. We grew up memories of camping, hunting, fishing, we were in close proximity to drive and enjoy the Pacific. We spent time climbing trees, and playing outside for hours on end, enjoying the simple things in life that brought us so much joy
