Today we’d like to introduce you to Hilary Johnson.
Hi Hilary, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m what they affectionately call a serial entrepreneur, but that wasn’t always the case.
I started my professional career right here in Tampa working in the wine industry, but like many young professionals, I didn’t really settle into my career until years later when I started working with Miller Brewing Company. During the course of 8 years, I climbed the corporate ladder working in sales & marketing, while moving to Montgomery, AL, New Orleans, LA, Nashville, TN, and eventually Chicago, IL. My last role was working as the Sports Marketing & Entertainment Manager overseeing our sponsorships of NASCAR and the #2 Miller Lite Dodge driven by Brad Keselowski.
But working for someone else forever wasn’t in the cards! My desire to create and build something of my own prompted me to take the leap to become an entrepreneur. I moved to Charleston, SC, and spent the last decade launching, growing, and selling multiple businesses…hence, the serial entrepreneur namesake! I’ve produced large-scale community festivals & events, run a mobile yoga business, launched an e-commerce brand, and built a global coaching business for women entrepreneurs with Hatch Tribe.
Today I spend the majority of my time coaching business owners on growth & leadership, as well as running elite mastermind groups for experienced entrepreneurs.
This year I made the move back to Tampa and it’s been a welcome return. After 16 years of being away, the city sure has changed a lot, and I’m really grateful to be here celebrating a new chapter in life.
Outside of work, I am a keynote speaker and author of “A Girls Guide to Surviving the Startup with Your Mind, Body, and Soul Intact”, an encouraging read that imparts road-tested wisdom for tackling the inner and outer work of being the boss. When I’m not working (and it’s not a full-blown pandemic shutdown) you’ll find me traveling the world with a single carry-on bag and hunting down the best bakery in town. My mantra is “Live Loud. Eat Well. Travel Often”.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Good Lord, NO! You may have read my story about all the businesses I’ve created and thought it was a breeze. But I can assure you it was not. One of my favorite failure stories was Spring Jam Music Fest, a 2-day music festival where Ed Sheeran was set to perform. The night before his performance we had torrential rain that completely flooded the site & ripped up tents from the ground. After a whole lot of sopping up water with towels, and waiting for the tide to drop, the site was functional and we let the crowd of raving Ed Sheeran fans come in. And his performance was absolutely incredible. But at the end of the day, we had lost $30,000. Tickets & concession sales were way down because of the weather, but we managed to deliver a great experience in the mud, but we lost of a lot of money. It was a painful experience, but one that I weathered (pun intended) and it taught be a great deal about navigating the highs and lows of entrepreneurship.
