Daily Inspiration: Meet Josue Nunez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josue Nunez.

Hi Josue, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
My story all begins with my son being born right when the pandemic started. At the time I was working TSA at RSW Airport and they had just granted me maternity leave. At that time my Wife had bought me my DJ controller and pushed me to start practicing how to DJ while I had the free time with being quarantined at home. She really wanted me to go for my dreams.

Through that time I would get on Instagram LIVE and DJ to gain an audience and to gain some confidence. I would get on almost every day and practice. It eventually started building up my momentum and as soon as businesses were opening up I got an opportunity to play at local bars and lounges in the Fort Myers/Cape Coral area. I eventually quit my day job and became a full-time entrepreneur ever since.

I now travel and DJ in the biggest clubs all over Florida, Connecticut, and New York. Texas and Vegas are coming up in the next upcoming months.

I also got fortunate enough to partner and work with Curate Entertainment, which is a luxurious wedding/entertainment company based in Florida, I get to DJ all different types of events not many Djs get those opportunities this quickly. I officially have been open for business since April 28, 2020, three years to the date.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has been a challenging road. NO shortcuts, all grind. The main struggles that come to mind are the nights I sacrifice without my family. I have a 3-year-old boy, a 4 month-year-old girl, and a wife at home. It could be tough some nights feeling guilty working in a nightlife setting and also feeling like I’m missing out on memories.

I also struggled with the politics that come with this business. A lot of great DJs don’t get the recognition they deserve simply because they aren’t around the right people and that took me a while to really understand and conquer.

Lastly, financially, I had to invest a lot of money to eventually make it back. It definitely wasn’t the easiest decision to buy all the equipment and invest back in music and outfits for shows and not make much back in the beginning.

Money was short starting off and I felt the constant pressure to provide back home. Thankfully those sacrifices and challenges have made me the businessman that I am today.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a DJ. I curate playlists/mixes for the nightlife scene (Lounges, bars, and private parties), and also DJ corporate events and Weddings. I’m mostly known for mixing all types of genres together and for having a very large range of understanding and reading a room. Knowing the time and place to put on certain songs to get the events as hyped as possible. I think that’s what really sets me apart from most DJs.

I could read a room and instantly freestyle and know how to make an experience with the people that are in the room. I truly believe that mainly comes from passion and a gift from God. I’m mostly proud of never giving up on myself, and continuously getting better at my craft.

There were a couple of times when I didn’t think my talent was enough. I would have some self-doubt, but I never gave up. I’m also proud of the business relationships I’ve built with other big headlining DJs and big club owners/promoters. Those relationships build my confidence and my status in this market. I’ve been very fortunate to have all this hard work lead me to where I am today.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Follow your dreams, never give up, and make the best of your time with your family and what you love to do. Take advantage of waking up every morning!
