Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Singleton.
Hi Jay, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in Miami, Florida. I began playing saxophone at the age of 12 at a local middle school. After graduating from a magnet high school I decided to attend Florida Agricultural & Mechanical and Florida State Universities located in Tallahassee. Later in the summer of 2016, I opted for a life change and relocated to Tampa, Florida.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
As a child, I was raised in a single-parent household with my younger brother. Our mother was very hard-working and made the ends meet. However, due to lack of financial resources I wasn’t afforded the opportunity to take private music lessons like many of my colleagues. Therefore, as a young musician, it was a challenge for me to keep pace in acquiring the basic skills many of my counterparts possessed. This consequently kept me “on my toes” and prompted me to work even harder. Eventually, as a college student I was able to take consistent lessons with a qualified instructor.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As an artist, I take pride in providing audiences with engaging and memorable performances they can’t forget. I have the awesome privilege of performing for crowds weekly and thrive on the energy and enthusiasm of those in attendance. Hopefully, during these performances they’re taken on a pleasurable journey via the interpretation of various R&B, soul, funk, jazz, gospel and blues renditions of their favorite tunes. I’m currently working on original music and perform in TWO local bands, my own band, The Soul Purpose Band and longtime Tampa favorite, The Beat down Band. Be on the lookout for several projects in the coming months from both groups.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I’ve learned over the years that opportunities often moonlight as risks. These very risks, in turn, become our greatest successes. As a man of faith, I’ve learned to operate in faith and not in fear and embrace the beauty in the process of growing and learning daily. “He who is not every day conquering some fears has not learned the secret of life.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson
