Conversations with Savannah Levell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Savannah Levell.

Hi Savannah, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My name is Savannah Levell and I’m Saint Petersburg based photographer. I started out with my first DSLR in high school. I would capture moments with my friends and then became interested in making an art form out of it. I have definitely branched out with my work since taking photos in the high school cafeteria. I put the camera down for a good part of my twenties, then when I was 25, I found out I was pregnant with my daughter. I took a huge leap of faith and bought myself my dream camera. It’s funny to look back because at the time it was one of the boldest moves, I’ve ever made. I didn’t have a lot of money back then and honestly was in a bad place where I didn’t really believe in myself at the time. But there was still a spark of light that made me choose to believe that I could capture not only every precious shot of my daughter but also provide for her with it. I started working with local businesses providing images for their social media accounts, and my confidence grew. I would get my practice in anywhere I could. I would ask to take photos for my friend’s children, weddings, and even just simple portraits. I now have a portfolio that I am really proud of, and it all started with that one little leap of faith in myself.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My biggest struggles along the way have been myself. Photography entered my life at a time where I lacked confidence. It’s extremely vulnerable to put your personal work into the world. Especially when creative fields are subjective. You are subject to backlash as easily as you are to praise. I still find myself learning new things about my camera and processing my photographs thru Photoshop and Lightroom. I hope I never stop learning new ways to take photos. I never will, and that’s what makes it so exciting for me. As long as I’m providing images I am proud of, I will never stop capturing little moments of time.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in social media photographs for businesses but also provide other services to a plethora of other clients. I have shot portraits, weddings, events, and even concert photography. I would love to say I have a project I am most proud of, but I like to think my work in general is something I’m proud of. I never thought I would be a published photographer or work with some of the brilliant minds I get to shoot with. I’m always thinking of new and creative ways to use my camera. I don’t confine myself to one method of using my tool aka my camera. I try and interpret the beauty I see using my camera. I am a sentimental human by nature and photography is one method I use to save precious moments throughout my life.

What matters most to you?
Family is the most important thing in my life. I have been blessed with a beautiful daughter named Samara. She’s the reason I work so hard because she’s such a true blessing to have and she deserves the world. Other than my family, I truly appreciate my freedom and traveling. I spend days on the road and spend a good part of my year traveling the southwest of the United States. I find a lot of inspiration in the desert. Nature is one of my favorite subjects to photograph.
