Conversations with Johnny McCormick

Today we’d like to introduce you to Johnny McCormick

Hi Johnny, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?

I originally started the journey back during my collegiate years at the University of South Florida back in 2012 with the name (Mac’s Catering). I honestly would cook at my apartment for my roommates or during our social gatherings with friends because being in the kitchen was my happy place. I would get comments or feedback from them to start taking my cooking serious, so I took their advice. During that time on campus, I had the pleasure of catering graduation dinners, fraternity/sorority banquets, and various other functions. I took time off after graduation to enter the corporate world because I had just started my family. So the venture into the food business took a pause. Here we are in 2021, a family-owned and operated business ran by my wife (Joshondra McCormick) and I, with a revamped name (Mac’s Family Kitchen), new burst of energy, but same passion and desire for cooking great food. We have been on a mission to get our name and food back out there since the beginning of the new year, one event at a time.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?

It’s been far from a smooth road. The hiatus since college was challenging mentally since I needed to focus on my full-time job to support my family; entrepreneurship was too much of a risk and was just not the right move for me at the time. Also, allowing the “imposter syndrome” to play a role in the distraction. I had to overcome this and not let it stop me. Despite all, cooking has never left my heart so I’m putting it all on the table now, pun intended!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?

We specialize in southern-style comfort food, but I love barbecuing. I would say I’m most known for my barbecue ribs, chicken, and mac & cheese. I’m most proud of sticking to one goal I had back at the end of 2020, where I told a good friend that I would be cooking for Super Bowl 55 in Tampa. We kept that promise and cooked over 800 wings for orders we had during the weekend festivities. And I think that’s huge for a small business just starting back.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?

My family matters the most. If it wasn’t for my grandmother letting me lick the spoons after making cakes and pies or my mother showing me her recipes and around the kitchen or my grandfather teaching me how the grill that passion and love for food and cooking wouldn’t be in my heart today. Now I have my own family to pass down not only the recipes and passion to love something you enjoy doing but a business and brand.
