Today we’d like to introduce you to Debbie Lundberg.
Hi Debbie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
After loving the experience and having support and success for 14 years at General Motors in a variety of field, headquarters, and National roles, while adjunctly teaching Dale Carnegie Training, I met my husband, who with a love of the South, did not want to move to Michigan for my next opportunity. With some creativity and the courage to pitch a novel idea of a seven month plan, I was thrilled to uniquely retire from GM rather than quit at the age of 34. That lead to working for a consulting firm for a year prior to starting my own practice. Being a Tampanian at heart, even if not on my birth certificate. In 2006, I launched Debbie Lundberg, Inc., which became Debbi e Lundberg Life & Business Coaching, and eventually Presenting Powerfully. Throughout the evolution and growth of the business, the focus and perspectives shared have consistently been on communication, behaviors, and relationships. The services provided include Keynotes & Talks, Strategy & Facilitation, Teaming & Training, and Performance Coaching. With the majority of my engagements being outside of Florida for companies and organizations of all sizes, staying involved in the Tampa Bay community has remained a priority through volunteering, serving on boards, and offering one pro-bono event each month as well as two community rate experiences for local not-for-profits.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Having a non-compete with Dale Carnegie Training and Right Management Consultants at the beginning of my venture as an entrepreneur meant I honored what I signed and focused on Real Estate and Mortgage, where there were not clients that presented conflicts of interest. After two years, I was able to create many programs and take them to a wider industry audience and gain footing. In 2020, with 60+% of my business requiring travel, I booked only $2,000 in new business in 6 months, and yet instead of letting that get me down, I buckled down and GAVE. Over 50 sessions of “How to be a Remote Work Rockstar” were delivered free of charge to clients, organizations, and groups, plus I started daily videos for encouragement, and wrote the book REMOTE WORK ROCKSTAR, and gave away hundreds of copies. This gave me purpose, relevance, and the ability to assist others. People do not go broke by being charitable, and yet being charitable often inspires gratitude, and that is what assisted with the 2020 struggles!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Because I wrote a book called “Reversing the Slobification of America,” I am known for my LUNDBERGisms and how they assist people in de-slobifying their personal and professional lives with practical tips and tools for everyday etiquette and confidence-building!
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
In third grade, with my allowance from chores, I saved up to buy some markers. Many people wanted to use them, and it dawned on me that this could work out well. I asked Mrs. McKnight, our teacher, if I could have an attendance sheet for a marker checkout business where each marker was a penny a day or a nickle for a week to “rent one.” It went really well for months until there was a bit of a squabble over a color, and slime ended up in someone’s hair, and the marker checkout items and tracking system were collected, never to be seen again! This is one of my favorite childhood memories because we had a ball, I made some money, and it was a good lesson in business at a young age!
