Today we’d like to introduce you to Byron Boykins.
Hi Byron, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
It all started my sophomore year of high school. My mom bought me a HP point and shoot camera and it’s been uphill since then. After taking portraits of my friends, I eventually took on the interest of photojournalism and received the opportunity to take photos of students that had a unique sense of fashion. After high school, I put the camera down and focused on music and tried to become an engineer but that dream faded quick after my first semester of college. After years of making music, I decided to pick up a camera to record my own videos and ended up becoming a full-time photographer. Since 2012 I’ve been evolving with my artistry and in 2018, I graduated with my degree in photographic Technology and since then have been a certified photographer.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As a photographer, everyday you learn something new. From lighting techniques to camera gear there is always a never-ending battle of learning the craft and wanting to perfect every image you take. One thing people may not speak on is how social media is a gift and a curse. When your an artist your in a constant battle to improve your work and sometime seeing other artist create and you be at a standstill can cause you doubt yourself. For me personally, I’ve been there before but finding a way to promote my work, gain clientele and consistently create content has allowed me to now look at others work as an opportunity of wisdom and learning tools for the craft.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a creative, I have multiple avenues to show the world. I currently run a photography business by the name of Eyeconic Creations Photography LLC. I also create content for YouTube reviewing rare and exclusive sneakers. I specialize in photography but also in the process of learning how to take my videography skills to the next level. Since 2012 I’ve been looking through a camera viewfinder, capturing moments and individuals with a story to tell about themselves. I feel I stand apart from other photographers because I look for my photos to tell a story about the individual I capture as soon as I press my shutter release button. I rebranded myself to Eyeconic because I literally see and create work that is iconic and one of a kind. Also, I’m one of the flighest photographers you’ll ever met; my style and persona allows me to connect with my clients who range from the ages of 16-30. They want a photographer that understands them and can relate, I am that guy that allows them to be free in my presence.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
First off, my mom deserves a lot of credit. Since day one she has been a big supporter and never once doubted any of my journeys, especially with photography. Who would have ever known buying that point and shoot camera for Christmas would bring all of this. Secondly, shout out to the one-stop shop crew (Rodney, Donte, Will) and my brother Jared Walker Aka Walk. They were the only ones that trusted my vision and allowed me to come into the shop and create since 2016. Now we all are partners and use the studio space to create and find our peace. Big shout out to my mentor Deanna Sapp Phillips of Photo Announce it. When no other photographer would help me with an internship during college, she took me in with open arms and showed me not only photography skills but also how to run a successful photography business and how important it is to know how to create a living wage from photography. Last but not least, my beautiful Fiancé and soon wife to be Tekendria Green of TALENTEE KREATIONS LLC. She has been my biggest supporter yet, from helping with sessions, investing into my business financially and most importantly, encouraging me to keep going when I wanted to give up on photography. She is my best friend and partner; without her support in my darkest times, I wouldn’t be here.
