Community Highlights: Meet Safrone Presley of Saffrons Gourmet Island Sauces

Today we’d like to introduce you to Safrone Presley. Them and their team share their story with us below:

In 1991 Saffrons Caribbean Restaurant opened on 38th Avenue North in St. Petersburg Fl. Saffrons became one of the best-known restaurants in the Bay Area. Safrone Presley and her Mother Chef Jackie Hill heritage consist of Jamaican, Trinidadian, Caymanian, and Basian. Our travels and heritage have allowed us to cultivate an eye for superior food. Saffrons family has owned several Caribbean restaurants and catering companies over the past 30 years. We believe healthy food does not need to be bland. Saffrons has won several best of the Bay awards and has had favorable reviews in St. Pete Times and Tampa Tribune. Saffron’s downsized their restaurants and decided to bottle their own line of Caribbean Sauces and focus on cooking classes.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The Restaurant business is a hard business. When we started in 1991 we had a great following as St. Pete’s population grew it was hard for small “mom and pops” to compete. The big chains had big dollars for advertising. Our great food and personal service kept us in the game but it hurt our bottom line. We loved the food industry and saw a market and a way to stay in the industry that we grew to love and started our own line of Gourmet Caribbean Sauces. Now people who were missing Saffrons could still have our delicious dishes in their homes.

Saffrons Gourmet Island Sauces mission is to bring taste and delight in every bite. We believe healthy food does not have to be bland. Our line of sauces included Jerk Marinade, Jerk Basting, Curry Sauce and a Ginger Pineapple Hot Sauce.

Any big plans?
We are working on creating a bigger online presence. With Covid, it has been difficult to market face to face. Now that Covid restrictions are being lifted we will be working on cooking classes to teach our customers about Caribbean cooking and spices and how every meal can have taste and delight in every bite.
