Today we’d like to introduce you to Picasso Snow.
Hi Picasso, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My earliest memory of creating would have to be from middle school. There was a competition for class t-shirt designs, and I surprisingly won amongst my peers. The design was super basic, but I remember how excited I was to see my work on the backs of every student in class… Fast forward to today, and I still get that same feeling every time I sell a painting!
Growing up in Baltimore, there wasn’t much public art or colorful buildings in the neighborhood, but moving to Florida in 2016 exposed me to an art culture I’d never experienced before. I was so inspired by the colorful city, eclectic people, and serene environment, that I began to create more and started applying to art shows. I’ve met so many amazing artists and collectors along the way, I hope to continue to connect with new people and make a difference in the community.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being a one-man band would have to be the most challenging thing for a small business owner. I’ve always been an artist, but learning to monetize my craft meant that I would need to be the marketer, budgeter, online supporter, shipper, creator, AND social media master!
While this is still an ongoing challenge, I’ve gotten much better with time and have learned to block out space to create, maintain my website, respond to emails, and meet deadlines on a more consistent basis. I’ve always enjoyed art as a hobby, so in order to shift into a full-time career, it was essential to develop a business plan and set measurable goals to grow and make room for improvement.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Picasso Snow offers a range of services from commissioned art projects, live painting sessions, custom apparel, paint & sips, and more! But Picasso Snow isn’t just a business, it’s who I am. A fun, expressive, light-hearted creative that enjoys extending a piece of myself onto the canvas.
This journey came to me naturally, and I’ve been embracing it proudly over the last 7 years. While I’m open to painting just about anything, my body of work has evolved into a composition of black women, culture, public figures, societal issues, and nature. I’m inspired by so many styles of art that I’ve tried them all at least once.
Though I mainly create portrait art, I try to incorporate a lot of boldness, color, and detail with each piece. My obsession with detail stems a lot from my engineering background, as I’ve always been very technical and critical of just about everything (lol). This can become a bit excessive but I feel it’s what makes my art unique to me and I’m glad so many people resonate with that.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
One word, adaptability!!! The lockdown introduced so many new ideas from creating custom puzzles to hosting virtual paint and sips while everyone was stuck indoors.
The pandemic offered me the opportunity to become a virtual art teacher for Pinellas County schools, allowing me to connect with the younger generation in a fun and meaningful way. At the time, I was still a full-time engineer, so it was refreshing to see my students filled with excitement after a long day.
