Today we’d like to introduce you to Tayler Sallee.
Hi Tayler, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Kansas City, Missouri with a strong curiosity about the world of design and began crafting up-cycled clothing and jewelry samples at a young age. While obtaining my BA in Fashion Marketing & Merchandising from The Art Institute of Tampa I soon began to learn more about the unstylish side of fast fashion after attending Fashion Revolution in 2019 at The University of Southern Florida, where I was introduced to sustainable fashion… I wanted to be a part of the fashion world but didn’t want to create mass amounts of waste or support unethical companies. I taught myself how to sew on a machine in the fall of 2019 and created my brand Tailor Sallee to fulfill the need for trendy eco-conscious clothing in the Tampa Bay area. Every piece of Tailor Sallee clothing is handmade by me and has the lowest impact possible on the planet because my designs are made from recycled materials and require no new resources.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Teaching myself to sew was no easy task. I watched countless hours of online video tutorials and I ultimately ended up learning from trial and error. I remember one instance where it took me an entire day and several attempts just to sew in a zipper properly. Another challenge that has been a struggle for me is how to advance and expand quickly, but sustainably. I am conscious of the carbon footprint my fashions create and that means making sure that zero waste is made from my designs.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Tailor Sallee?
