Hi Ivan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am the founder of ModelKite Transport, a company I built from the ground up with a clear goal: create a modern, disciplined transport and logistics business that actually does things the right way.
How ModelKite Started in Canada
ModelKite began in Canada, where I launched the transport and logistics business from scratch together with the support of my brother, Andrew. From the very beginning, Andrew played an important role in the company’s growth. Having worked as a truck driver himself, he understands the trucking business from the inside out: real life road conditions, carrier challenges, rates, timelines, and what actually matters to drivers.
In the early days, I handled the setup and structure of the business while Andrew contributed his hands on industry knowledge. This combination helped us build realistic processes, fair driver and carrier relationships, and a transport and logistics business model that respects the realities of trucking. Instead of chasing fast volume, we focused on structure, transparency, and long term partnerships. That foundation helped the company grow steadily and responsibly.
As the transport and logistics business expanded, I put strong operational controls in place and made sure we stayed compliant with all regulatory requirements. I worked closely with accounting, insurance, and compliance partners to make sure the business was built to last, not just to grow quickly.
Expanding into the United States
After establishing a solid base in Canada, I made the decision to expand ModelKite into the United States. Opening the US branch was a major milestone and required navigating a new regulatory environment, licensing, insurance, and operational standards.
I personally led the setup of the US operation, from entity formation and FMCSA compliance to banking, insurance, and internal workflows. The goal was not just to open an office, but to replicate the same disciplined model that worked in Canada while adapting it to the US market.
Today
Today, ModelKite operates in both Canada and the United States. I stay closely involved in the business, especially in hiring, compliance, and operational growth. I believe in being present with the team, understanding day to day challenges, and making decisions based on real data and real experience.
My approach has always been simple: build a transport and logistics business that clients trust, drivers and carriers respect, and employees are proud to be part of. ModelKite is the result of that mindset, and we continue to grow with the same principles that started it all.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey has not always been smooth. Early on, we faced challenges with compliance, understanding cross-border regulations, and building trust with drivers, carriers and clients in a competitive market. Managing growth while maintaining operational discipline was another hurdle, especially as we scaled between countries. Financial management and navigating unexpected market shifts also tested us.
Despite these obstacles, our hands-on experience, structured approach, and deep industry knowledge helped us overcome challenges and continue growing steadily.
