Rising Stars: Meet Ameena Khan of Tampa Bay Area

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ameena Khan

Hi Ameena, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am a visual artist, art educator, and community activist in the Tampa Bay area. I believe that creative expression is an integral part of the human experience, and that public art and art programs are crucial to building safe, connected, thriving communities.

While I have been painting and teaching art for many years, I began facilitating community art experiences in 2016. During these sessions I guide participants to work side by side to create art. Depending on the project, some artwork is completely organic, defined entirely by the participants and without much design input. On the other end of the spectrum are the public murals that I design and guide the participants to complete.

Whatever the framework, the outcome is the same: connection and community building.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Creative expression is one of the most natural activities a person can participate in, and through that lens my journey as an artist has been smooth and seamless. That said, our society does not always recognize the value that art and artists contribute to our daily lives. There is a sense that good art is exclusive and inaccessible to everyday people. That art is only worthwhile if it can be monetized, and that the only art worth making is the one that ends up in a museum behind a velvet rope. These are powerful sentiments that can overwhelm and impede the very real human desire to create, express, share oneself, and connect through art.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a K-5 visual art teacher, a large part of my time is spent supporting children as they tap into their creativity and express themselves in new and exciting ways. I love nurturing young artists and helping them discover unexpected skills that are outside of their everyday activities. I carry this enthusiasm outside of the classroom and into the community by facilitating group art experiences, and creating murals for public and private clients.

Beyond the studio I am proud to serve on the board of NOMAD Studio, which is a collective of artists, advocates, and activists who use art to help build happier, healthier communities. We recognize that access to art programming is often inequitable, and so we provide free access to high quality creative opportunities to underserved and under resourced communities.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Yes, I would love to share a little about my upcoming project. This year, the City of Temple Terrace is celebrating its 100th anniversary, and as part of the Centennial festivities five artists have been commissioned to create murals throughout the community. After a competitive selection process that began in March 2024, I was honored to be chosen to design a community engagement mural at the Omar K. Lightfoot Recreation Center. I’ll begin the work on February 21st, and over the following week community members of all ages will join me to bring it to life. I’m honored to have been selected for this opportunity and can’t wait to collaborate with residents to create a mural that is both beautiful and meaningful.
