Hi Matthew, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Metroflex Gym was created in 1987 in Arlington Texas back in 1987. Metroflex was an answer to the commercial gym industry that had begun to take shape. Commercial gyms of the time and even today, rarely cater to athletes dedicated to powerlifting or bodybuilding. Metroflex was an answer to this void and established its name during the 1990’s as it gave rise to the greatest bodybuilder of all time, 8x Mr. Olympia, Ronnie Coleman. Metroflex Gym Tampa is the first Metroflex in all of Florida and continues to build upon the legacy established back in 1987.
Having been a former member of a local Metroflex Gym in Texas, I moved my family from our home in Texas and traveled to the Tampa area to open the first Metroflex in all of Florida.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As a first-time business owner, there have been many trials and tribulations. As I have learned, there are never just struggles at the beginning, struggles will always occur throughout. It’s being prepared and anticipating the struggles are where you develop as a business owner. As your business grows, so too does your ability to answer your struggles. This all comes with time and development. My business acumen is much different now from when we first opened and hopefully that trend will continue.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The original Metroflex Gym is an old school training facility, created back in 1987. Metroflex is a storied franchise that is world renowned within the bodybuilding and fitness community. Metroflex separates itself from the competition by offering a different atmosphere from the standard commercial gym scene. Metroflex offers old school gym equipment found from the 1990’s-early 2000’s while also offering brand new, never before seen equipment. Metroflex Gym Tampa offers equipment from industry leading manufactures such as Arsenal Strength, Panatta, Booty Buidler, and EliteFTS. Metroflex Gym offers an array of old school equipment you won’t find anywhere else. This includes Atlantis, Cybex, Body Masters, Icarian, and Hammer Strength. We also offer iron weight plates and iron dumbbells, which are now considered a thing of the past since major gym outlets have switched to rubber. We are open 365 days out of the year, 24/7. Our facility is a one stop shop for all things fitness related. We offer over 70 pieces of fitness/strength equipment and have revitalized our facility by opening a new recovery/wellness center in the gym. Our facility now offers contrast therapy in the form of Sauna and Cold Plunge as well as a physical therapy office under Wolfepack Therapeutics by Dr. Josh Wolfe.
We also have over 8 personal trainers on staff that offer a wide arrange of services from diet/nutrition, bodybuilding competition and lifestyle training.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
You can be as prepared as you’ll ever be but you won’t truly grasp the scale of what you are up against until you actually do it. You must be able to learn and adapt because every formulation you had conceived prior to opening will either be scrapped or altered. Those who are willing to adapt and implement new or different strategies will succeed.
