Daily Inspiration: Meet Layla Gibbs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Layla Gibbs

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Back in 2016, when I was sixteen, I stumbled across a lip scrub recipe on Pinterest. I’d always loved experimenting with beauty DIY projects, so I decided to give it a try. After tweaking the recipe to make it my own, I was hooked and thought, “Why not share this with others?” That’s when I begged my mom to let me start selling my creations on Etsy, and luckily, she said yes.

What began as a small Etsy shop has grown into something I never could have imagined. Now, eight years later, we’ve expanded into a thriving online marketplace that offers over 25 different products—all natural, sustainable, and made with the same care I put into that first lip scrub. It’s been an incredible journey, watching this business grow from a teenage hobby into something much bigger. And yes, we still sell those original lip scrubs, a little nod to where it all started.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey has definitely had its ups and downs, but I’ve learned to embrace every challenge along the way. In the beginning, one of the toughest hurdles was figuring out exactly who my target audience was. I had this great product, but it took some trial and error to connect with the right people who would appreciate it. Another struggle was generating enough income to not only sustain the business but also keep up with the growing demand. Balancing the need for more supplies while staying financially stable was a constant challenge, especially since this business has always been my main source of income. Finding ways to save money and reinvest in the company was crucial, and it’s something I’ve had to be creative with over the years.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Since Earthy Goods has been my first and only job, I’ve never followed the traditional career path—but I’ve certainly worn many hats. In my business, I’m the graphic designer, video editor, social media manager, and customer service representative, among other roles. I’m incredibly proud of the determination and resilience that have brought me this far. It’s been eight years since I started, but my passion for what I do makes it feel like it all began just yesterday.

What sets me apart is my unwavering commitment to my goals and the vision I have for my business. I wake up every day with the same ambition that drove me to start this journey, and I work tirelessly to bring that vision to life. I’m fortunate to have discovered my passion early on, and even luckier to turn that passion into a fulfilling career. Many people spend their lives searching for what they love, but I’ve had the privilege of walking in my purpose every single day, fueled by a deep love for the work I do and the impact it has.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
The COVID-19 crisis taught me the invaluable lesson that in times of hardship, it’s crucial for us to come together and support one another. During the pandemic, I witnessed this firsthand when our online sales skyrocketed. There were days when I made more sales in a single day than I typically would in three months. This experience underscored the power of community and resilience during challenging times.
