Today we’d like to introduce you to 3D187 Art Collection
3D187, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
3D187 was created out of aggravation and anger towards all the Injustice and inequality going on in the world. As men and women of color and various sexual orientation, it was difficult to see everything going on in the world and not be able to do anything but talk about it. So we banded together and along the way found like-minded people who were willing to stand up alongside us. As artists we decided to use our talent to create apparel which in turn we would commit a percentage as a donation to various nonprofits fighting the fight that we were looking to fight ourselves.
We chose our name carefully. 3D of course referencing 3 Dimensional in art. “187” is the California penal code for murder; which we are of course very much against. Yet, we chose it because our intention is to “Kill Art…Not Each Other”. We want the world to choose art and choose life over the negative Everytime.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth ride. Choosing to put forth the messages we do tends to divide the audience in half. Either you’re for the LGBTQ+ community and lifestyle or you’re not. Either you’re for social and racial equality, or you’re not. So we have run into our fair share of people who don’t echo our sentiments. On top of that, selling apparel and raising money for causes are never easy endeavors to begin with. But, if it was easy everyone would be doing it, and the rewards wouldn’t be so sweet!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Our art is a collection of styles and messages from various artists. We are a true collective. Not every design is cause specific, but every design made and sold tributes to donations toward nonprofits. Sometimes the design is as clear as our “Arrest The Hate” design, yet other times it’s more on the artistic side like “A Beautiful Dizaztr”. We don’t handcuff our artists. So if they want to draw skulls and flowers, and present a badass design…then we are all down for it! I think the freedom to design and the passion to make our communities better sets us apart from other apparel companies. It’s never about making a dollar; it’s always about making that dollar so we can give it away. We also actively seek art work from convicted felons, both in and out of the system. This is just another way we strive to help as many as we can, including those who have been ostracized by society.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
3D187 is never about one person, hence why you won’t see a “face of the company”. We can say that growing up in our respective parts of the US and being Hispanic, Black, female, and much more was not easy. We’ve been picked on, blatantly disrespected, discriminated against, and even beat up. Are those things terrible? Absolutely! But they also shaped us to be the people we are currently. If it wasn’t for those experiences we wouldn’t be here talking to you.
As a collective whole, we can say we are passionate about art. It’s normal to have artwork sent back and forth, conversations about designs, and even some heated back and forth talks. But, we love it and we all get along! Most importantly, our visions and missions are aligned.
