Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Genevieve Dobson.
Hi Dr. Dobson, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started off working in my industry when I was living in Harrisburg Pennsylvania. I happened upon a job that was hiring someone to help with client management. After about six months I was asked to move to the Tampa Florida office to continue to work for the organization. I was one of the best customer service representatives in the office and learned quickly what the student loan regulations were and how to best help those with student loans. However, after five years the company wanted me to move to their Boston office and I declined to avoid uprooting my son. I decided that year to start my own student loan management company, Degrees of Success. That was in 2010 and I have been happily managing my company ever since. While working at both the previous company and my current company, I completed my undergrad degree in Psychology, my MBA, and just graduated with my Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) last year. I also completed three books to help those with student loans to learn the tools they needed to overcome their debt.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Entrepreneurship is never a smooth ride. The minute you are at the top of the rollercoaster you end up dropping hundreds of feet to what seems to be your death. Then the minute you think you are going to just give up you get an opportunity and back up you go again. It’s very much liked a rollercoaster. The one thing I had to learn fast was being comfortable being uncomfortable. You have to learn to ride the waves and not let your emotions get the best of you.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Degrees of Success?
I am known as the student loan expert. After 15 years and working with hundreds if not thousands of clients over that time you learn a thing or two and are able to pass that knowledge down. I have spent a large part of my adult life helping people to sift through the confusion of their loans to make better decisions on how to consolidate their loans, reduce their payments when needed, get out of default and so much more. It’s important to note that my clients are not treated as all the same with a cookie-cutter solution but rather are given an individualized plan of action based on their needs and situation. I determine exactly where my client needs help in managing their loans and step in to help from documentation preparation, communicating with their student loan company and so much more to ensure they reach their goals. My services include but are not limited to student enrollment which is helping students or their parents in enrolling into school.
This includes assistance with their FAFSA, scholarships, writing their essays, ensuring the correct loan is utilized, and much more. I also offer student loan management which includes everything from assisting in reducing payments, consolidating the loans, getting out of default, removal from default, and providing additional documents that may be needed regarding their loans (i.e. mortgage letters explaining the status of the loans). I also offer credit management services which include education on credit, disputes as needed, a financial plan of action, and step-by-step assistance to increase their credit score.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Genuine connections are key. I have found the best way to find mentors or great people to network with is by being genuinely interested in that person. When connecting with someone, try to find someone who has similar interests as you. Someone who inspires you or pushes you to do better or be more. Someone who you feel is connected in some way. I have made life-long friends by reaching out to people who I truly wanted to get to know and those friends have wanted to support me and my business because they liked me as a person.
