Check Out Cameron Moody’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cameron Moody.

Cameron, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Detailing cars was the first on-paper job that I had, and I’ve always had the vision to own my own business that was centered around car detailing. I don’t want to go too deep into those details because you know how visions are… I don’t want anybody stealing my magic tricks!

I was born and raised on the island of O’ahu, and when I graduated high school I moved to Washington state to go to college and play basketball. The basketball side didn’t work out how I envisioned, but I completed my education and ended up living there for 8 years.

I was able to do some really great work in the nonprofit and educational sector, and in 2014 I moved to Tampa to continue my education at USF. I ended up earning my Master’s degree in School Counseling. When I was at USF, I needed a way to fund my education and make some extra money. It was then that I thought, “What better time than now to start building that dream I had been having for a long time!”

Fast forward to 2022, and that dream has slowly been building and is coming closer and closer to being a reality!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
That’s a tough question. There are always going to be challenges when you are trying to build something from the ground up, and I literally mean from NOTHING, so the challenges that came were expected. That said, I know that challenges can ALWAYS be more difficult. The more prepared I was, the smoother it went; the less prepared I was, the more I had to adapt on the fly. Whichever way it went, approaching the challenges with a positive growth mindset made them what I refer to as smoothly challenging.

When you are trying to turn self-employment into a well-oiled machine, it takes time, effort, and strategy. It also takes trust. When you have a vision and are working to build it the way you see it, the hardest thing to do is to be okay putting some of its aspects into the hands of others. That’s probably been the biggest challenge. The other big one is time.

Working full-time and trying to turn a “side hustle” into a main hustle requires a lot of extra hours, a lot of stamina, and a lot of discipline. Sometimes you want to be out there hanging out and relaxing, but when you have a goal and vision you want to achieve, you have to sacrifice with the confidence that the investment now will lead to freedom later.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Full-time, I’m a high school counselor. I specialize in providing a safe space for students in school to work through all of the different struggles of adolescence. Giving young people a voice, providing them with knowledge, and encouraging them to pursue all of their hopes and dreams is one of the things I am the most passionate about, and how I identify. Being able to challenge systems of inequity and injustice by working directly with young people is the single most rewarding thing I’ve ever done. Being able to have discussions with students, families, and stakeholders on the state of adolescent identity development, mental health, and how these things are shaped and molded by the systems that we are all required to function in is why I do what I do.

I also identify as a business owner, and my business is automotive detailing. Island Shine Mobile Detailing is the foundational piece of a long-term vision that I’ve had growing for a number of years, so it is my baby. As an automotive detailer, I am known for my detail-oriented approach to keeping my customers’ vehicles clean. I approach every detail with the thought that not only do I want my clients to feel like their car is as clean as when they first bought it, but I want it to be so clean it makes them FEEL good to get in it and drive it.

Island Shine isn’t just about their car physically shining, it’s about tapping into that inner SHINE that everybody has. Driving around a freshly cleaned car is one of many things that gives people that feeling you get when you feel inspired. That’s what I want my clients to feel when they get in their car after I am done with it. There are so many things in life that can inspire people, and everyone has something that can tap into that inspiration that we all have inside of us. Whatever it may be, these are the things that make us SHINE, and this is the feeling I want to evoke in my customers after they have had their vehicles serviced by us. Shout out to Cash Money Records, because every time I finish detailing a vehicle I want my customers to be able to get in their car and bump that “Get Yo Shine On”

So maybe we end by discussing what matters most to you and why?
It’s hard for me to pick one thing that matters the most to me. There are a lot of things in life that matter to me, but if I had to narrow it down to what matters the most, I’d have to say my family, my relationship with God, and how I treat and show up for people every day.

I believe that people deserve to feel valued and respected, because the value of every human life is priceless. Every person has the potential to do incredible things, and I think that working to create a culture of love, equity, and respect where we show up for people and encourage every person to pursue their dreams has the potential to create drastic change in the way that society functions.
