Check Out Alexia Sky Colón’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexia Sky Colón.

Hi Alexia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Music and dance have been in my life for as long as I can remember. My mom and grandma encouraged me to sing and dance and share my talents with the world. It all started at centerstage dance academy at age 5.

I grew up dreaming of dancing and singing on Broadway and as I grew older and more aware of the different industries dance has to offer, my dreams grew as well. At 18, I booked my first performance job at Busch Gardens Tampa. From holiday shows to the disco to the jungle of Katonga. From there I went to the open seas, dancing in shows for Royal Caribbean cruises. In between contracts I would teach and work events as entertainment.

In 2011, I saved enough money to follow my dreams in Los Angeles. I hustled hard between dancing and acting in commercials, touring with hip hop company iLuminate, teaching dance through non-profit organizations, back up dancing in the AMA’s, show creations in Vegas with Kenny Ortega, performance ambiance, and hype girl at corporate events and parties, site-specific dance education and shows with Heidi Duckler Dance. I also temporarily joined the circus doing Chinese pole and dancing with fire.

I then moved to the east coast to be closer to family. I lived in Connecticut with my sister for six months and attended a yoga teacher training to build more knowledge on how to help the dancer’s body. In 2015, I packed my bags again and headed to New York to pursue the dream that started it all.

I continued to do commercials and corporate gig events until I booked my first regional theatre show West Side Story at Papermill playhouse. In 2017, I made my Broadway debut in what felt like the most incredible full circle of life. On Your Feet at the Marquis Theatre! A story about Cuban immigrants coming to America and fulfilling their dreams. I knew my ancestors were proud. In 2018, I booked Hamilton and was sent to the Chicago company at the CIBC Theatre. This experience opened my eyes wider than ever and my heart began to question, what’s next?

As thankful as I was living my dreams, I felt there was more for me than performing in shows. I continued to do the show but I realized I wanted to touch people’s lives in a different way. I began to create, write music, teach dance again, and explore different ideas of what I could do. I hired a life coach who helped me see that I could be anything I wanted, with some willpower, habit changes, and beliefs just like I did my dance dreams. Through this experience I realized, I wanted to help people in the same way.

In 2020, I joined a new show called Fly in San Diego. Shortly after our opening night, the world shut down and the theatre industry went 18 months without work. During this time off, I came home to Tampa. I took a health and life coach certification program and began to fall in love with teaching dance again. When theatre began to open back up in 2021, I was asked to join a Hamilton tour. I went on the road for seven months while continuing my journey of refining my coaching skills with clients.

In February of 2022, I hung up my Hamilton boots and returned home to live out my new dreams. Coaching life, health, and dance skills to kids and adults. While teaching dance at various studios I’ve launched a life and health coaching business called Move Thru. My dream is to help as many people as I can to Move Thru the places they feel stuck in their bodies, stresses, and creative and life goals.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road to success is rarely smooth. There were times I’d go months without booking a big-paying job and struggled to pay bills. I went for a period of time sleeping on a friend’s couch in N.Y., and skateboarding to work as a waitress because I didn’t have enough money to pay for the train.

There were times I was told I wasn’t skinny enough or thick enough or white enough, dark enough, Latin enough, tall enough for the job. You hear not a lot. But I learned over time I did not have to take the criticism personally and I only needed to be who I was and wanted to be, that’s when the opportunity really opened up.

When I would just be me. You can choose what critiques you allow to move through you and which ones you let move past you.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an artist and a coach. I am a life and health coach, a choreographer, and a dance educator. I have taken the skills and experience I’ve learned throughout my artistic journey over the years and I teach the tools that helped me gain the success and dream life I imagined.

I hold space for others to define their dreams and I hold them accountable for the goals they set to get there. I provide outlets for people to connect to their breath connect to their body and find joy through movement and motivation.

What I’m most proud of is achieving my childhood dreams of being an entertainer and realizing I can create new dreams to achieve and aid others to do the same.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was really shy until about age 10. I came way out of my shell and was known to be pretty loud, goofy, and always laughing at something.

Dancing and singing were a part of my every day. I practically lived at the dance studio and was a part of the competition team. I transferred to Blake Performing Arts Highschool Jr. year because dance after school wasn’t enough.

Anytime I was home I was in my room creating something and listening to music.
