Conversations with Marlon Boone

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marlon Boone.

Hi Marlon, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
At around age nine, I use to take my dad’s saxophone out of the case and try to play it. He had, at that point, stopped playing and was working to support the family. Seeing that I had an interest, he began to teach me how to read music and started me on clarinet. As I entered middle school a year later, I got teased for having a clarinet in band and switched to saxophone. So here we are 38 years later and I still love picking it up.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
For the most part, I have had a pretty fun ride pursuing music. It hasn’t all been easy, but I have more good stories to share than negative ones. The music industry isn’t easy to break into, but everyone has a lane with dedication and drive. Find what it is you are great at and run with it. Just be the best you. I would say one of the biggest struggles is that there is so many great saxophonists all over the world. To be heard, you have to be very creative at getting yourself noticed or heard.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a professional saxophonist specializing in smooth jazz and R&B. Though I’m versed in other genres, smooth jazz is my favorite. I provide entertainment for any event that needs live music. I also perform at weddings, parties, corporate events, and even special dedications or serenades. I’m most proud of being a trendsetter and seeing so many others pick up my ideas and implement them. It’s gratifying to know that your peers think you do something that they can also do and benefit from. I feel what sets me apart is how easy I am to work with. Things happen unexpectedly, and I’m always prepared to handle any changes they may get thrown at me without over reacting to the situation. I feel it’s easier to help resolve whatever issue at the moment than becoming another issue because something isn’t going as planned.
