Today we’d like to introduce you to Latoya Cave
Hi Latoya, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a proud U.S Navy Veteran after serving 12 honorable years of active duty service. Soon after transitioning out of the Navy, I found myself having to face job hunting realities. I was quickly met with common job search struggles, disappointments, and frustrations, which accidentally led me into the world of resume writing and how to format a resume for my own success. At the time, I was a single mother, and having a job after so many years in the military was critical. Callbacks were basically slim to none, and if I did receive a response, it wasn’t for an interview, but to let me know I had been passed over for another candidate. That’s when I realized that my resume was hurting my chances. I remember reading and Googling every article under the sun on tips on how to improve my resume. That night I rewrote and formated three different resumes. The next morning, I applied with all three, prayed, and hope for the best, but I knew I’d have a winner if I received a response. Within a few days, I had landed my first interview and job with a small veteran owned tech company in Newport News, Virginia. That experience awakened my desire and passion for assisting transitioning military, veterans, and women job seekers and giving them a renewed vision and outlook on today’s job hunt.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
After finding a job, I never really thought about resume writing as a skill or talent until a few family members and friends started asking for advice on how to write a resume or how to apply for jobs. After moving to Tampa, the idea of owning my own business weighed on me heavily. I’ve always wanted to own a business but always felt like I didn’t have a real talent or hobby worth investing in. It wasn’t until my husband mentioned that I try my hand at professional resume writing. Many of my friends and family had found success with the resumes I had written in the past, and he thought I should pursue resume writing as a business. After almost four years, my business has finally caught its stride, but the beginning of my journey was definitely a struggle.
I started my business, and shortly after, I accepted a new position. My new position was great, but having a job hindered me from making community connections, attending chamber and business events, and fully maturing my brand. Although I knew how to write resumes, I wasn’t prepared for the business aspect. I struggled with time management, administration, being productive, and the biggest of all, SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING! Before having a business, I was never a social media butterfly, so jumping head first into marketing my business was a huge struggle for me. Many trials, errors, and failures have strengthened my business muscle, and I’ve learned so much along the way, and I’m still learning. These experiences have given me a better perspective and respect for business ownership.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
