Check Out Nick Meaden’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Meaden.

Hi Nick, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My dad is a drummer, so he’s the one who initially introduced me to playing any sort of music. I remember learning around 8 or 9 years old, but it fell out of my interest as I got older…

Come middle school I joined the school orchestra as a percussionist and met my first bandmates. We formed our own band outside of school, and I was the drummer. From there my bandmate taught me guitar because I wanted to start singing and playing. I really dove into songwriting around that time, but the band broke up after a couple years.

I found the whole creation process to be frustrating with no one to play with and bounce ideas off of, but I ended up learning a lot about myself and what I wanted to do with my music.

I was fortunate enough to form another band when I went to college in Boston. This new band opened my eyes to so many new ideas and genres that I had always stayed away from. The band broke up right before I moved to Tampa, but not before we were able to record “The Indica Ooze Project”.

Once I got to Tampa I started writing like crazy. It was my first time living on my own, and it was not going so smoothly. I look at my time in Tampa as a massive learning experience as both a musician and an individual. I’ve been able to build my confidence, make some genuine connections, and slowly find my audience one open mic at a time.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I consider myself to be very fortunate. My family has always made enough money and been supportive of my goals, even if it hasn’t always been peachy. Moving to Tampa and living on my own with my girlfriend was a painful and transformative experience, but I’m proud of how I’ve evolved over the past 2 years.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a musician and a songwriter. My primary instrument is guitar, but I play piano, drums, bass, and I produce beats as well. I respect songs that sound amazing without compromising the lyrical integrity or purpose of the song. I see artists too focused on sound to focus on meaning and vice versa, but there are some artists that manage to fall right in the sweet spot. I believe in being persistently genuine and honest because people know real when they see it, and if you’re not being real then why should anyone listen?

What’s next?
If all goes well, as soon as my fiancé graduates from USF we’ll be moving to California.
