Today we’d like to introduce you to Keshia Butler.
Hi Keshia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hey Tampa! My name is Keshia Butler. I’m a Certified Financial Education Instructor ℠ and the founder of Scraped Knee Finance.
My company helps Black and Brown communities heal their relationship with money and build financial stability using realistic, behavior-focused strategies. This company was created for people like me – those who stumbled into adulthood with little to no financial knowledge and financially scraped our knees because of it. But just like with any fall, I know we can get back up, and I help by showing how to do so.
As for my background, I’ve been working in financial services since I was 20 years old. However, when I started in this industry, it wasn’t because I had a passion for it. The decision was strictly an act of survival. By that age, I had already been evicted from my apartment, had debt collectors calling my phone, student loans in forbearance, and I was working a very low-paying job. Quite frankly, I RAN to this industry as a way to fix my circumstance and learn the fundamentals of finance.
Since then, I’ve held roles in insurance, residential lending, small business financing, and universal banking. Each role unlocked a new level of understanding. Thanks to on-the-job training, I’ve spent the last 11 years learning what it takes to be financially whole.
Now, I’m taking that hands-on experience and sharing it with my community. Scraped Knee Finance brings together mindset, lived experience, and community as the curriculum. Our lessons don’t teach “budget, save, invest”. Those are important steppingstones and there are many great organizations here in Tampa Bay that can assist with learning them. But for some of us, unless that information goes from our head to our heart, the notes will just stay in a notebook. What has created actionable change for my clients and me are lessons about confronting limiting beliefs, learning how to move from survival mode to stability, and having open honest discussions about cultural habits that are holding us back.
As we all know, money isn’t always talked about openly, so a lot of us have been forced to figure it out on our own. Scraped Knee Finance is here to help you change that narrative.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
With a name like Scraped Knee Finance, it’s definitely safe to assume that you’re talking to someone who’s been through a thing or two. Yes, the road has had its bumps and my path to financial stability included a lot of twists and turns. But the truth is, that experience is not specific to just me. A lot of us are scrambling trying to figure out how to navigate our finances. We’re working hard, doing our best and yet still feel stuck. I’ve been there and know that feeling very well.
Great news—there is a flip side to that feeling. Through shifting my mindset, leveraging my culture’s unique strengths, and building a community of shared wisdom, I have made tremendous strides towards healing my relationship with money. My goal now is to guide others through that same journey. We’re better together and it’s time for our community to move from surviving to thriving.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Scraped Knee Finance is an educational ecosystem built to help underserved communities heal from financial trauma, break unhealthy cycles, and transform what they believe is possible for their future.
By taking the fundamentals of financial literacy and translating them through the lens of culture, community, and lived experience, we’re bridging the gap between traditional financial education and real life. Our down-to-earth offers are designed to feel less like a lecture and more like advice from your homegirl who works in banking. That’s because we’re navigating this journey right alongside you.
This company was built by someone who’s lived it, not just studied it.
Now, let’s talk about the products. We’re designing a curriculum that honors your journey while positioning you for growth. So whether you find our content through social media, a live event, or a workbook – all avenues lead to education made for us.
Accessible to all, our free resources include our monthly newsletter and online essay articles. Available on our website, these dive into practical strategies to help you unpack financial trauma and build real confidence.
Locally here in Tampa, we hold live workshops. These affordable group sessions are where we start incorporating community into the curriculum. Our workshops don’t just deliver information; they create a safe space so people with similar experiences can learn alongside each other and build meaningful connections. After attending, you walk away with real tools, not just notes.
Early 2027, we will be releasing our first workbook. Titled after a current workshop series we’ve been hosting, the accompanying workbook will be a self-paced journal designed to deepen the experience. While the workshop creates space to learn from others, this workbook is full of thought-provoking prompts to help you explore your own mind & beliefs.
We also have offers for organizations. Our corporate wellness programs are how we partner with nonprofits, universities, and corporations looking to bring culturally-relevant financial education to their employees and participants.
Whether you’re ready to unpack your own financial journey or looking to bring these vital conversations to your organization, Scraped Knee Finance has a space for you.
Check out our website to subscribe to the newsletter, browse upcoming events, and pre-order the workbook. Let’s heal, learn, and grow together.
