Life & Work with Butch Ryan of Tampa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Butch Ryan.

Hi Butch, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been playing the local Tampa music scene for 40+ years. I’ve done tours on the East coast as well as the Midwest here in the states along with 2 tours of the UK. I ended up living and playing in the UK for 5 years before returning home to Tampa 4 years ago.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Tampa’s music scene has never really been prolific compared to other cities in the US. You can play cover music pretty steadily but as far as playing original music, it’s quite difficult here. Unfortunately, the original music scene isn’t as greatly supported in the Tampa area as opposed to other cities in America. To play original music here you must grind out every chance you get. It’s tough to say the least.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’ve released 9 studio albums of all original music in my career, all of which are found on all digital platforms under Butch Ryan, Groovy Cool, Butch Ryan Band, Butch Ryan & Groovy Cool, Butch Ryan & the Antique Poets. I am currently working on new material for a 2027 release with Butch Ryan & the Antique Poets.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
It’s always best to make friends with local bands and musicians. It helps to find local original gigs. I did the same once I moved to the UK. You invite bands to play with you on the same bill when you’re booking or putting on a local show and they will in turn do the same for you. It’s best when bands support each other rather than be in competition with each other.
