Meet Jennifer Owens of Tampa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Owens.

Hi Jennifer, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started painting at the age of 7 or 8. Art is the only thing I’ve ever wanted to do. I got started painting for others by responding to craigslist ads back in the day. My first gig was painting some murals for a teenager and a small childs bedroom. The man who hired me operated a haunted corn maze and then commissioned me to paint all of the props and rooms for the haunted maze! You never know what work can come from your first job. All you need is one to get started and word of mouth is still a powerful tool in today’s digital world.

Today, I am a freelance artist and entrepreneur. I have branched out with my 12 year old son, making organic and vegan friendly self care products for every body as we strongly believe in equality for all.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have had many struggles in my life as I think anyone does. I lost my way as a teenager and wasted a lot of time I could have been producing or diving deeper into the art scene to network with like-minded people. At 32 years old, I finally got my head out of the clouds and got my BFA in 2D Animation.

If there are any teens reading this, please stay on YOUR path and don’t get wrapped up in your friends paths. They probably are not the same path. Stay true to you and what you are passionate about! If you’re an adult reading this, please know – it’s NEVER too late to try something new!!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a multi-disciplined artist working in both traditional and digital media. I started out with traditional mediums such as painting, graphite/charcoal, and pastels. When I first started, I was fascinated by form and light and nature, inspired by Van Gogh and how his emotions drove his work and style.

Now, I find myself less interested in what I can draw and more interested in what i can do with a particular medium by experimenting with it. Break it apart, get it wet and smash it, or light it on fire – what do these changes produce on paper? What if I mix two different mediums together…what new thing can this become? Experimenting outside perceived boundaries is what pushes art and life forward.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
